NEW MIX! electro house. take one

This is my first publishable attempt of mixing with my new CD-J 1000, Priscilla (named so because it's used often at Burning Man). This mix fuses Electro House and Remixes and is a bit on the Progressive side. It's inspired by Demetreus & Delicioso cuz they were chillin' wit me on Friday.

Who needs tv when you can Dream

I slept for 13 hours last night. It wasn't because I was tired or sick or bored. I think I did it just to do it. You see, I found a day job, and I think it may be my last opportunity to sleep for a long time.

I started working when I was 15. I woke up early to take Honors classes, then went to school, then participated in sports, then worked a pizza job, then worked a grocery job on weekends. I even had time for Homework and 90210. I didn't go to parties or drink. Not that I didn't want to. I just didn't know where to go. I mean, it wasn't this schedule the entire time in High School. There were breaks here and there. Once Masil & I even snuck out of the house. But for the most part, that was my life. I got 5 hours of sleep a night.

When I got to college, I learned to work hard and play hard. That was even my personal motto for a while. I learned balance. I learned to get things done and still have time to join in on the fun. I did well in my classes -- not excellent -- but well. I worked my part-time job at McD's, I was a writer and photographer for the school paper, I played Intermural sports. I even helped start a female and co-ed Intermural league (so gay). And I drank along with the rest of the 7th-floor girls. They drank every Friday and Saturday. I couldn't do that. It was too much for me. So I worked Fridays until midnight and then drove them all home from the parties. Saturday was my day to play.

When I got out of school, I started working. I learned an entirely new skillset for my career as a computer geek. So after work, I took classes. Perl, Web Databases, Dreamweaver. Once I took a 9 month course in Fundamentals of Security. I'm what you call an Overachiever.

Then I discovered House music. And I became a DJ.

But being a newbie DJ just don't pay enough to sustain. It's an art. And art, in this society, is not what makes the world go round. Most artists must work in order to fund their passion, in hopes that some day the means will shift. I was gifted the unique opportunity to work as a DJ for 6 months. I knew that I was blessed with some 'time off' in my day job and I feel that I used it wisely. I used it to work exclusively as a DJ ... build relationships locally and out of town, increase my fanbase, explore new genres and new equipment, re-design my web site*, throw some kick-ass parties**. And sleep. I needed to sleep. 5 hours may be fine when you are 15. But at 30... I want double. In society today, we do not allow ourselves enough sleep. We work too many hours. We keep ourselves busy with too much 'stuff'. We watch tv to calm ourselves down in order to sleep. Truth be told, when you do sleep as much as your body asks you to, you dream. Such fabulous dreams. I travelled planets, played in bands, had children. I met Tegan & Sarah, seduced Kate Winslet. I could fly.

I guess last night, when I was thinking about how I have 1 week left off from working a day job, I thought about what I wanted to do. I had already said goodnight to my girlfriend. I could read, watch tv, spin records. I could talk to my roomies or surf the net. But what I really wanted to do was sleep. To dream. Your mind is a place where you can create a reality in 7 minutes. In the world, it takes a little longer. It's taken me 15 years to create this reality. Who knows, it could another 15 years to create the next. Isn't that what we are really working for anyway? To create a reality where everyone in this world can live their dreams?

Work for change.

----
*I had to part in this, VuDu did it for me. You'll see it soon.
*BTW -- Nothing that I do is on my own. I have a LOT of great people working just as hard as I do.. and they didn't get 6 months to sleep. Sokolicky, Momo Swells, Pink, Da Man, Hei, Fishlure, VuDu, Samantha, Elletee, Masil, Jessica Star, DiRty, Liz ... the list goes on ... That's why I feature everyone on my blog.
To say thanks. And give credit when I can.

Obstacles.

Its so hard to tell whether an obstacle that finds itself in your path is one that is there for you to overcome or one that is there to alter your route in a different direction. As I sit and stare at my new web site (soon to be released), a symbol of the next leg of my DJ career, I wonder also what the next leg of my daytime career is to be. What, that is tangible, can I look to as a symbol of the choices I'm supposed to make in order to face forward? 'Feel forward', I always say. But what is one to do when even forward feels unclear? Which is best? To make a decison about a path? Or to allow the path to make its way to me?

The Leschi Lounge rocks. Last night we hosted a movie party to raise funds for our Theatre room. (Thanks all!) We have visions of outdoor movies being held in our backyard in the spring and summer. Halfway through the movie, our roomie Da Man pulled us aside. The place he was meant to play with his new friends in the band Plane Site was double booked at the venue downtown (a Huka joint!). Can they come jam at Leschi? Dude, totally. After our Double Feature, we headed downstairs to listen to an excellent jam session which included such instruments as Bass and Acoustic Guitars, harmonica, hand drums, vocals and a didgeridoo. This place is like frat house for musicians.

With performances by:

Aerialists, contortionist, illusionists, fire
Pure Cirkus started out as a Seattle based piercing/suspension group called P.U.R.E. (people undergoing real experiences). Over the course of 3 years the group grew larger and larger as it began to perform shows both public and private, pulling together many talented performers who strived to push the limits of the human mind and body in an ancient art form that dates back to the oldest mummy found to date until it finally evolved into what is now PURE CIRKUS. As P.U.R.E entered into its 3rd year performing all over Seattle it spawned its own fire troupe, run by Xavier Frost and Jennifer Morgensen. Soon enough it began to take on all forms of entertainers such as jugglers, clowns and other creeds of artists that simply wanted to place that they could entertain and grow as a performer. So began Pure Cirkus. The group that began as a private get together of friends to create an inspiring personal experience born out of our primordial society has transformed into Pure Cirkus. A blend of clowns, fire, suspension/piercing, dancers, acrobats, musicians and artists from all over that have come together to build what we hope will be a long lasting cirkus that will come to entertain people for generations.

In the Theatre:

Breaks to Tribal Progressive through Hard Techno and Psytrance
Osiris Indriya (Iboga Records, Oracle Gatherings, IOSIS Art Party) is a legend of the West Coast Underground Dance scene. He has been featured with underground artists such as Brian, Brad, and Trevor of L.A. Moontribe, Manoj of Uplift in Portland, OR, trance goddess Phoenix Olivia in Vancouver B.C., and Lorin (bassnectar) from Santa Cruz/SF, CA. Osiris has also been featured along side recording artists Human Blue (Spiral Trax, chill code - Sweden), Ganga Giri (Australia) and SunControlSpecies (Zenon, Iboga - Australia), as well as Antix, Beat Bizarre, and DJ Banel from Danish Progressive label Iboga Records where he is now an official label DJ. He is a weekly resident at Contour Night Club in Seattle for IMPULSE Thursdays. All this while playing at forest, desert, beach, and indoor gatherings, club nights, and festivals up and down the west coast, as well as internationally including the Double 6 in Kuta, Bali and Shambhala Music Fesival in Nelson, Canada. Driven to take Seattle to the next level, Osiris has been deep into creating several projects. He has teamed up with Infinite Connections to bring the best of Europe’s tribal progressive trance music and world class art to the Pacific Northwest in a series of events called IOSIS Art Parties. As co-founder of the Oracle Gatherings, he is bringing a new paradigm in a growing dance community by integrating with the Northwest’s mythical undercurrent. All this has helped inspire the release of his all original progressive and downtempo CD, "Reach Within".

Tribal House and Breaks
Michael Manahan (Oracle Gatherings) has been involved in the underground visionary arts culture in Seattle for over 12 years as a DJ and event and music producer. Hailing from the burgeoning San Francisco house scene of the early 90s, Michael co-produced the original northwest full-moon celebrations lasting 5 years. Holding several residencies and as co-founder of the Oracle Gatherings, Michael has led many up and down the west coast through their dance journeys, from San Francisco to Vancouver, B.C. through Ashland and Portland and even Hawaii. His style remains deep, tribal house dipped in funk, peppered with bhangra, accompanied by beats that hit you like a rippling earthquake. With an eclectic composition, he crosses boundaries by weaving together a confluence of musical styles, but almost always with funky tribal and dubby influences at the roots. http://www.michaelmanahan.com

Progressively psychedelic to the core
Amanita (IOSIS Art Party) has been a DJ in Seattle for over 5 years focusing on the uplifting and driving sounds of psychedelic trance. Having played up and down the West coast with a who’s who list of international psychedelic producers and DJs such as Talamasca, Oforia, Shakta, Penta, Atomic Pulse, Wizzy Noise and Ticon, Amanita has shifted his focus to the more progressive side of psychedelic dance music.

Stylish tracks served with smooth-as-silk mixing and a celestial bassline

Jen Woolfe (Session) A native of Seattle, Jen Woolfe's seductive styles of House, Downtempo and Electronic Dance seamlessly blend daring vocals & erotic sounds over delicious beats. This enchantress draws you into her realm with hypnotic grooves, teases you with a hint of Tech, and melts you into the dance floor. http://www.jenwoolfe.com

In the Marquee Lounge:

Hippity Hoppity Funky Breaks and Drum’n’Bass
Shapeshifter (Static Factory Media/Buddhaful) as flagship turntable artist for Static Factory Media, Shapey continues to bring the art of turntablism to the world of electronic music. Known for hip-hop and nu skool breaks, down tempo and D&B, Shapey's distinct style of DJing is a must see. Striving to utilize the turntable as an instrument, Shapeshifter is also a strong member of the ten-piece funk/improv band, Marmalade (
http://www.buddhaful.com), with a residency at Tost Lounge in Fremont for three years. With years of turntable artistry and event production under his slipmat, Shapey has helped create the magic of Fremont's Mardi Gras Masqurade Ball 2005, Critical Mass-Seattle's Burningman Recompression 2004, Phoenix Fest 2005, and produces the 6-year running Gathering of the Ram. Shapeshifter has played with many of Seattle's premier talent such as KJ Sawka, Freeschool featuring Reggie Watts, Darek Mazzone, FourthCity, and rocked such venues as The House of Blues and Club Ice in Las Vegas, Le Bunker (Rio de Janeiro), Le Floride's 30th Anniversary Party (Nantes, France) and IOT Disco Teche in Tarragonna, Spain.

A surprise waiting to happen
Phidelity
aka Kris Northern is a veteran psy-chill DJ/producer from San Francisco. Hailing back from the early 90's rave scene, Kris developed the taste for psychedelic soundscapes and beats primarily of the storytelling flavor and has since forged his own unique style of mixing incorporating a wide palette of musical styles and tying his sets together with theme based storytelling elements.

Mixing techno and IDM just the way you like it
Greg Skidmore (Oscillate/thePGSeries) Along with Paul Edwards and Patrick Haenelt, Greg Skidmore brings in world-class producers and DJs through the auspices of their PG Series and Oscillate weeklies, respectively. Behind the Technics, Greg has earned a reputation as Seattle's foremost authority on esoteric electro and as a connoisseur of quality IDM. In fact, heads have started calling these styles “Skidmore music” due to his absolute mastery of them. All this and the dude just started shaving last year. (Dave Segal)

Smooth Downtempo

Cory Michael (einsoff) has had a fascination with rhythm since the tender age of 6 when he began drum lessons. He was so into the "drum set" that he swore off any beats not made "the real way". Those words tasted soooo good as he danced to house for the first time some years later. Another large influence at a young age was hip hop beats; maybe that is the root of his fascination with broken beats. His love of dancing brought him to DJing and he started dabbling after being inspired by the best of the Seattle underground scene. He started playing house of all sorts (whatever records he could borrow), then worked his way into breaks and down tempo. He still listens to all varieties of music, but anything with a broken beat holds a special place in his heart.

And spiritual reading with one of the most gifted clairvoyant/psychic/medium Seattle has... Spookee
I am a psychic medium: that means I see the future and spirits. I also read cards and give insightful, intuitive advice. In a reading with me you will learn that no one ever really dies, that everything is interconnected and that in your darkest hour, in a room with no other living being, you are never alone!

wash, rinse, repeat

Its Christmas time again and malls are packed. Seeing as this is the first time in 15 years that I haven't had a job (i.e. xmas cash), I've been storming my brain as to what to get my family for Christmas. Tho I don't do credit cards anymore, I do have a card for the Bon Macy's. Because you never know when you'll need to buy a suit. And even if I cut up the credit card, I can still convieniently use my name and social to make a purchase anytime I want, 24-hours a day, just anytime my little heart desires. Still, the thought of herding downtown amidst the crowd to ride the cold, shiny ferris wheel and buy glowy toys from competing Santas (yes, they were selling them on the streets -- 'Oh, Jonny's going to that Rave thing, lets get him some flashy balls and a pack of blow pops*...) ' was not appealing. So, my next thought --- Kanji! Perfect. But where on earth can I buy Kanji? I could look for some online, but it may not get here through the mail in time for the exact day Jesus was born. Or, I could traverse the midsection of the South Center Mall (and peer longingly into my favorite, but well beyond my budget boutique, The Buckle). But ew. Another mall. I'd been thinking so hard about this for the last week, that it hadn't even occured to me that I could simply draw the Kanji myself and it would cost only the amount of a pen and paper. It's just crazy that my first resource was the mall (ok, it was the Internet. You have to give me credit for being somewhat Evolved). But my second resource was the mall. I was stuck within my own container of consumerism long enough to forget that I have two hands that can craft a gift. That is scary. Even those of us who are privvy to the social behavior resulting from a society based on the buying and selling of material goods are prone to wash, rinse, repeat.

Euro-Boston Cherry Pop Vibe

Momo and I had a great time in Boston the last few days. Richie Rich hired me once again to DJ the Luftansia Holiday party, and we did so in style. Most of the kidz that work at the terminal there are European, so the track selection at the end of the night was more like the Electro Pop remixes that I pulled for Cherry last Friday (read: electro fresh) than what you'd hear at an old-fashioned American Holiday party (read: disco drab). Of course, the most popular are the ones that fuse both (read: pop electro disco dance), like the club remix of Tom Jones' 'Sex Bomb'. I'll see if I can pull together a more proper Boston Blog, but in the meantime, please pop in to Creme on Saturday for after hours as we re-incarnate the Euro-Boston Cherry Pop vibe.

NEW MIX! san francisco soul

Usually my mixes originate from me just starting up some records and pushing record. I guess I'm kinda lazy in that way. If they turn out pretty good, I post them. For this one, I mixed for about an hour and then pushed record. I think being warmed up really pays off.

This set is inspired by my friends at Deep House Originals. The first Saturday of each month at Baltic and every Friday at Temple Billiards, they bring the old skool House vibe of Chicago legends to our coastal town. Craig Alexander, Mark Grant, Theo Parish, Glen Underground and Rick Wilhite.. and in the near future, among others, Minx! I started thinking about who my influences are of House music and how West Coast I really am. While I devour anything that DJ Heather (Chicago), Robsoul Recordings (France) or Ty Tek (Denver) even hum, my Heart is in Seattle. But my Soul, my friends, is definately in San Francisco.
