Build a David Best Temple for our lost friends and neighbors.

..... TEMPLE FUNDRAISER: SATURDAY 4/1/06 DOWNTOWN ......

We are going to have a fundraiser downtown this Saturday. The goal is to raise at least $5000 to fund the construction of the temple. The fundraiser will consist of what we do best: art, music, great people and inviting spaces where we can be together. The fundraiser will not have an admission price. No booze will be sold (byo, yo!) to raise money. All money raised will have been gifted.

This is not something that we are doing for ourselves, it's a service
that we are giving to our community. This event will get a lot of
attention and will be attended by a lots of different kinds of
people, not just burners. For a lot of people, this will be their
first exposure to what burners can do.

Here's what we need:

.. YOU. Art of all sorts. Two more ass-kicking sound systems (including CDJs, turntables, mains, subs, monitors). Performers of all sorts (DJs, musicians, performance artists, dancers, if you perform, we wantcha!). Counselors, body-workers, people who can listen. People with party infrastructure: Lights, chill room supplies etc

Here's what we have so far:
A $200 check from David Best for "nail money". About $300 in other cash donations. David said that we could get "temple materials" from him. If I heard right, The Machine people are offering materials and supplies. We have us, and that means that we've got more resources and energy and brilliance at our fingertips than damn near anyone else I can think of. Final info on the fundraiser on Saturday. Don't forget the FOOD and be sure to remember to BRING BOOOZE because sure as shit we need it.

dirrty electro indie disco rock

I found a yummy electro online station! Er, I should say, rather, it found me. They played 'Daft Punk is playing at my House' by LCD and then the HOT remix of Bloc Party's Banquet. Plus Glodfrapp, Bow Bow Bow... it's hot. Very Cherry.

Abolish Fences

Two weekends ago, we had an afterparty. We have one every month -- and have had one every month since June. We started them in order to bring electronic music into the lesbian community. We decided on an afterparty because it was a niche in the community that wasn’t being filled.

Every month I hear people say when they leave ‘You have great friends’. And they tell their friends. And then they tell their friends.

We have a few mottos about the party. It has to be Sexy. It has to be Diverse. Excellent music. Quality people. Style. Art. We want a place where everyone will be and feel comfortable. A place where everyone will fit in. We averaged 15-20 people at the party for the first 6 months. Our home can hold at least 200 comfortably, and we knew we had a good thing to share. So to us it seemed rather empty. We started making flyers and hand-picking people to come by. Told friends to tell their extended friends. Wrote about it online. We created hype. Slowly, very slowly, our numbers started increasing.

Every month I hear people say when they leave ‘Everyone here is so warm and nice’. And they tell their friends. And then they tell their friends.

About 3 months ago, it caught on. Big time. Last weekend, there were over 100 people in my home. Over 50 that I didn’t know. We’ve had camera’s stolen. Jackets borrowed. Jewelry lost. Each month we scramble to clean, put up the walkways, light the candles. Each month we shush people who wake our forgiving neighbors at 5am, walking to and fro.

Every month I hear people say when they leave ‘I had the best time’. And they tell their friends. And then they tell their friends.

It’s now known in the lesbian community as ‘The Afterparty’. We hear acclimation about it upon meeting new people. We’ve been asked by the unknowing if we are attending. And its hype has expanded outside of the comfort of the community to two other overlapping offshoots-- the Burning Man Community and the Underground Music Community.

Every month I hear people say when they leave ‘I met so many great people’. And they tell their friends. And then they tell their friends.

Beauty has grown to be one of The Afterparty’s most powerful traits. It’s not only that the house itself is beautiful, but the people are beautiful. The vibe is beautiful. The diversity is beautiful. And the music is beautiful.

Music is a key and electronic is a gateway. It’s abstract, so it speaks exclusively to everyone. And the Rhythm allows the Syncopation of the Souls. It’s the river that binds us together -- that connects conversations to realizations. People barely even dance. But they listen. They learn. They are open to others. They feel.

It’s scary to bring people into your home. It’s scary to leave your front porch without knowing if you will return. It’s scary to trust your neighbor. People who have done so have lost their lives. But it’s imperative. A fence does more damage to a community than a shotgun. Keeping people out may keep you safe, but it will cut you off from society. And you may die inside.

Fear is the opposite of Love, and a Party is the opposite of War -- a protest against fear and hate. I’ve lived lifetimes amidst battles, and I’m tired of fighting. Let’s choose to be brave and play.

goan get me those baby back, baby back...

I went to the Veggiefest last weekend at the Seattle Center. There were rows and rows of vegetarian dishes to try. I found out that I’m a Flexitarian – one who has a mostly veg diet but occationally eats meat (going to Zoe’s house and porking out on steak doesn’t count). Pink is a spectacular Vegetarian (and kisser) She loves food (and kissing with food). She was in hog’s heaven. If you haven’t tried the Gardenburger BBQ Riblet’s, you must. Even if you aren’t a Vegetarian. There were people lined up waiting for them to finish cooking in small non-organic microwave the woman had sitting on the table. You couldn’t get to the front of the line. In basketball, we learned this move to block other girls from getting under the hoop to rebound the ball. It was a very effective move. You hunker yourself real low in front of the other person with your back to them, wrap your leg around their opposite leg, push your butt out really far and use your arms to block them in a jail-like position behind you so they can’t get around you. Someone actually did that to me. Just for veggie BBQ Riblets. I’m telling you, them suckers are yum.

one small step

It’s relatively easy to notice the large things that impact our lives – company closes, a new freeway ramp is built, the city’s team makes it to the championship. But what about the small things? Example: Last week I walked onto the elevator to work along with 8 other people. Because some of the passengers was heavier than average – and because there were so many people on it already – the door’s wouldn’t close. Naturally, we all scampered onto another elevator. But that one wouldn’t close, either. So I decided to take the stairs. My office is 7 floors up. I was winded after 4. Which meant I was only uncomfortable for 3 flights of stairs. And I thought, how silly I’d been to not realize how much it would improve my cardio health to add that 7 flight incline to my workout by using the stairs each day. Soon I’ll be winded after 5, then 6. Then not at all. I could have been annoyed at the event. But I wasn’t. I saw it instead as an opportunity to improve my ways.

A Trip about Jay

Jay Tripwire is one of my fav producers ever. However, since the beginning of time, I've had this aversion to him ... and anti-magnetism, if you will, where every time I try to see him he isn't there, or if he's there, I can't see him. This weekend is no different. He'll be at SeeSound Lounge Saturday (where he has a residency of all things), but I'll be in Whistler (in his home country). I suppose I can't complain, seeing as it's Whistler. But I do sure wish I could run into that Jay Tripwire. I expect I'll run into him on a bus some day... maybe in Spain...
