NEXT GIG: [ID] Fri Jun 17 @ Esthetic Evolution

Esthetic Evolution is a community based, participant-driven music and art festival centered around progressive thinking and self expression. The festival is located at the breathtaking Twin Springs Resort, nestled in the Central Idaho Mountains about an hour outside of Boise.

Esthetic features a weekend of live electronic music, performance art, speakers and workshops. We encourage attendees to contribute to the collective experience by any means of their imagination.

Our main premise is to provide a backdrop upon which participants can project their inner artist through a spirit of acceptance, collaboration, gifting, and love. Participants help us realize this vision more and more every year, with last year's (2010) participation soaring through the roof.

This year’s theme, “The Seven Chakras,” focuses on the connections between our bodies and the universe around us. Various Eastern traditions speak of Chakras as flower or wheel-like energy points running throughout the body. Each is represented by its own images and colors and corresponds to different actions, bodily functions and spiritual states. The most important and agreed-upon of these are the six Chakra points running down the spine and the seventh, Crown Chakra lying above the human head.

The Chakras draw in energy from the universe and bring balance to our spiritual, mental and physical beings. Healthy living, diet, meditation, dancing and exercise such as yoga help us balance our Chakras, feel more connected with collective consciousness and ultimately overcome attachment to our egos and corporeal forms. We are using this theme to create our music, art, stages and even event layout, and we will have many exciting announcements about this over the coming months. We hope you enjoy the theme and that it informs your intention and participation at Esthetic Evolution 2011.

ROOT STAGE

OLIVIER GIACOMOTTO
Paris, France – Techno / Tech House / Electro House
Definitive
www.oliviergiacomotto.com

Nominated as best electro producer for the Beatport Music Awards 2008, Olivier Giacomotto has managed no less than 8 Top Ten hit productions, a feat that has lead to him becoming one of the most in demand remixers/producers in the industry and firmly established him amongst the continent’s leading acts.

Having began his career working in recording studios back in the late 1990′s, Olivier learned the tools of his trade alongside various famous bands, producers, studio musicians and sound engineers.

Having released over 20 EP’s throughout 2004-2005, Olivier began to gain support & recognition from a host of major DJ’s & artists including the likes of Carl Cox, Misstress Barbara, Chris Liebing, Umek, Marco Bailey, Dave Angel and Green Velvet amongst many others.

The release of the “Jamon y Queso” EP in 2006 saw his career really take off, with instant creditation coming from worldwide dj’s such as the legendary Sven Vath and one of Olivier’s own longtime John Acquaviva… Indeed, it was Acquaviva himself who signed Olivier’s next release entitled “Walking on The Moog” to his own label : Definitive Recordings. a track that received international acclaim and went on to become Olivier’s first Beatport Top Ten hit!

This opened the floodgate for 2007 and 2008 and the Top Ten records came thick & fast. His reworking of the fantastic “Volta” by Robot Needs Oil, closely followed by his own incredible production “Gail in the O”. Olivier’s Top Ten hits have included his production “Wasabi on Top” and “Sushi in S Major” along with his remixes of both Hipp-E’s “Major Waves” and Mantra Vibe’s “Running From”, also the “Sofa King …Good” EP coproduced with John Acquaviva, and the “Eat What You Kill” Project with his other french partner dj Tonio.

Olivier’s success in the studio has seen his touring the world, demonstrating the overwhelming talent behind the decks that he has crafted over the last decade in some of the world’s most famous underground venues…. Privilege in Ibiza, Rex Club in Paris, Ministry of Sound in London, Heineken City Hall in Amsterdam, Zona in Moscow, X2 in Jakarta, La Bush in Belgium, Fabrik in Madrid, Lov-e in Sao Paulo, Turnmills in London, Summer Dance Festival in Colombia, Hrad in Slovakia, Dom Im Berg in Austria, Fusion in Germany. DEEPCHILD (LIVE)
Berlin, Germany – Deep Techno / Tech House
Trapez / Affin / Resopal Schallware / Anabatic Records
www.deepchild.com

If an increasingly demanding international schedule weren’t enough (try playing Germany and then Kuala Lumpur in the space of 4 days!), a continuing string of highly successful 12?s on labels and remixes have well and truly solidified deepchild’s reputation as a serious ‘contender’ in the saturated international dance-music community.

Detroit, Berlin, Tokyo, London, Vancouver, Prague, Cologne, Manchester, Leeds, Serbia, and more all feature in a yearly extensive dj/live touring schedule…

From ‘big-label’ original releases for labels like Trapez and Resopal Schallware, remix work for legendary producers New Order and Booka Shade (Get Physical), deeper cuts for Affin (German), and Kaato, and serious tech-weapons for BEEF, Om, and SanFrancisco’s Anabatic Records, a steady stream of bouncy, crunked-up tech-house sounds have insured deepchild has remained one of Australia’s most in-demand producers. Butch, Hipp-e, Robert Babicz, Tigerstripes, Jet Project, Worthy, Jimpster and Luomo (amongst others!) have all lent their remix credits to deepchild 12?s….

The journey has been a long and sonically expansive one. Recent dj support / chart from the likes of Loco Dice, Chris Liebing, Stacey Pullen, Thomas Schumacher, Troy Peirce (MINUS), Justin Martin (Dirtybird), Ivan Smagghe, Matthias Tanzman (Moon Harbour), and Abe Duque sits solidly against the proclamations of respected music journal, The Wire, who went as far as to proclaim that this sound was “as sexy and addictive as new-dub electronica gets”.

From tough, stripped-back techno to deep dub explorations, deepchild has proven a robust producer and highly respected dj and live-performer, and one of the few Australian-born producer/performers to have played the legendary Detroit Electronic Music Festival, as well both the much-coveted main-floor and Panoramabar levels of Berlin’s infamous techno-mecca, Berghain / Ostgut club on numerous occasions.

When Stereo-Heaven (the biggest dj store in Essen, Germany) found that their biggest selling tech-house record was infact written in a small share-house studio in Sydney’s Inner-West (deepchild’s “No Disgrace”, on Future Classic), they took the time to make special mention of what is indicative of deepchild’s head-turning appeal:

“over here in my hometown in Germany, we really love “no disgrace”!! it’s also by far the best selling record in our new local shop, too…from deep or tech house to minimal djs, hiphop and electronica fans – everybody is into that 3-tracker…really an amazing 12? you’ve created!”.

More recently, deepchild has produced #1-sellers for Anabatic Records and Cologne’s finest – Trapez…
Freerange Record’s ‘tech-house institution’, Milton Jackson, phrased is rather more succinctly, “Oh My God. I think you are my new hero”.

CROWN STAGE

OTT (LIVE)
London, UK – Psydub
Autonomous Music / Moog
www.ottsonic.net
www.autonomousmusic.com

Ott was doomed to be a teenager in the cultural wasteland that was the mid-1980′s provincial England. After a brief period wandering aimlessly through the hairsprayed deserts of New Romanticism and poodle-rock he found refuge in the warm, inviting sounds of Scientist, King Tubby, LKJ, and Prince Far-I and the effortless grace of European experimentalists Neu! and Kraftwerk. Here he stayed until he felt it was safe to pop his head up again.

The end of the 1980′s brought with it a cultural and musical revolution and Ott headed to London to immerse himself in the new energy. Initially unimpressed by the frantic, unmusical clatterings of acid house and “rave” he discovered a new wave of artists who apparently shared his love of organic dub and pristine electronics. Artists such as The Orb, Dub Syndicate, FSOL and African Head Charge. These were people who were unafraid to combine bass-heavy rhythm, abstract soundscape and timeless melody into a huge, ever-shifting sonic universe which reflected perfectly the spirit of hope and positivity which prevailed.

It was at this point that Ott found his first work as an engineer in several studios around North London. Working obsessively, 18 hours a day, seven days a week for the next ten years, Ott began developing the skills which would see him go on to work with many of those who created the sounds which inspired him in the first place – Brian Eno, The Orb, Youth, African Head Charge, Steve Hillage, and On-U-Sound.

After spending the 1990′s freelancing around London as a studio engineer and producer, Ott celebrated the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st by giving it all up and moving to a remote cottage in South West England to be alone with his cats and his studio. With a vague plan to create the perfect soundtrack to an outdoor English festival he embarked on a series of sonic experiments, drawing heavily on the classic dub sounds from Jamaica and hypnotic electronic pulse from Germany which had provided such a refuge during the 1980′s. A period of intense creativity followed, during which a great many tracks were created and then stashed away on tapes, seemingly never to see the light of day.

In the meantime, Ott hatched a plan to remix half a dozen or so classic Hallucinogen trance tracks and release them as dub mixes – slower, fatter and more chillout friendly. In 2002 the album “Hallucinogen in Dub” was released via Twisted Records to universal acclaim.

Buoyed by the success of “Hallucinogen in Dub”, the following year Ott gathered together and released his earlier sonic experiments as the album “Blumenkraft” which was also very well received and which attracted a great many listeners around the world.

The next few years passed in a whirl of gigs, remixes [Shpongle, Entheogenic, Tripswitch] and collaborative projects – “Umberloid” with friend and multi-instrumentalist Chris Barker, and “Gargoyles” with Simon Posford [Hallucinogen, Shpongle]. During this time Ott travelled the world, got married, welcomed his daughter Daisy to the world and wrote his third album “Skylon” – which was released on Twisted Records in early 2008.

(BREAKFAST WITH) MANOS
Seattle – Breakfast Beats
Innerflight
www.innerflight.com

An integral part of the Innerflight record label and music collective, Manos exemplifies a fresh and funky groove that pulses with prismatic energy to stimulate the mind, open the heart, and move the body. His distinctly playful, trickster style is expressed in his namesake, taken from an evil deity in an obscure 1960s low-budget horror movie. But it’s not all cheap thrills with Manos…

Known for dosing Seattle dance floors with everything from acid-laden techno and house to reverie-inducing experimental and starry-eyed electronica, his musical adventures traverse divergent sonic terrains but nearly always venture into psychedelic territory. Legend has it that Manos’ kaleidoscopic style crystallizes during the enchanted wee hours of the morning, where his intuition and intention twinkle within his signature “breakfast-style” sets, providing a feast for the ears and flights of fantasy for the mind. At once sensuous and sentient, bizarre and macabre, his motley assortment of muses include the mid 90s Minneapolis EDM scene of his youth, industrial, punk, and hip-hop albums of the late 80s/early 90s, and his father’s record collection. Presently, this penchant for dissent and the transgressive has aligned with his bohemian spirit, awakening an enigmatic yet unmistakable artistic sensibility that resonates on multiple levels with dancers
and heads alike.

Whether rocking an all-night underground party at the break of dawn or sharing the bill with such diverse megawatt talents as: The Flashbulb, Three, Phil Western, Woody McBride, Noah Pred, Bassnectar, Freaky Chakra, or Luke Solomon, Manos consistently funks up the dance floor, shaking the booties and expanding the minds of the vibrant Northwest underground of which he is a passionate and deeply rooted element.

KADEEJ-VO!
Seattle – midbreakcrunklovestep
Innerflight / Shameless / People of Earth
www.innerflight.com /www.simplyshameless.com /www.djdevinkelly.com

Innerflight resident Kadeejah Streets has a monopoly on the booty shakin’ beats in Seattle’s clubs. His sets are the ones you hear at the club while talking with friends, and after every three songs find yourself asking “who is this DJ?” Moments later you’re joining the masses on the dance floor in a beat-inspired bonanza. A perfect mix of nü-rave bangers and old-school jams, Kadeejah’s sets are glorious testaments to the persuasive power of a DJ’s mood. With dexterous hands, this musical master turns the underground upside down and shakes it like a Magic 8-Ball, ensuring that you will howl at the moon with your eyes rolled back in your head.

Seattle-based DJ, producer and promoter Devin Kelly has been a techno activist for over a decade. Whether DJing as Adlib or promoting with Shameless and People of Earth (P.O.E), he is constantly sharing a radical vision of good times, heady tunes and dancefloor debauchery with everyone he meets. His versatility, technical skills and mixture of cerebral yet crowd-rocking cuts has earned him local bookings alongside artists as diverse as James Holden, the Flashbulb, Kilowatts, Egyptian Lover, Dylan Rhymes and countless others. He has become an underground fixture over recent years and regularly headlines clubs, renegade parties and outdoor festivals across the Western US. But he is perhaps most well-known as co-creator of Idaho’s Esthetic Evolution, the weekend of forward-thinking music, intentional community and ridiculously good times that has become the Summer right of passage for innumerable West Coast heads. He will be performing with Innerflight’s Kadeejah Streets at this year’s Esthetic as “Kadeej-Vo!” With their powers combined, they will play stupidly awesome midtempo breaks, IDM, dubstep, leftfield and general ephemera.
