Glamour-R-NOT-Us

I'm totally sick. It started at about 2pm on Thursday. Actually, I think it started at 4:30 on Tuesday when I did hot yoga for the first time ever. It was beautiful. 1 full hour and a half of sweating my brains out. I drew everything out ... emotions, stress and apparently a few bugs that had been soaking in the hot tub of my Chi.

On Thursday afternoon I started feeling really cold and goose-pimply. Then the sore throat I had woken up with became more and more inflamed. Next thing you know I'm wrapped up on the couch in sweats, 2 sweatshirts, a huge blanket and the heat cranked up to 75 degrees F-- and I was STILL freezing. Luckily I have fantastic friends like Sokolicky who not only put a spare on the flat tire (I'm TELLING you, she's a Rockstar) that I'd noticed on my car in the morning (actually Lisa D. noticed it after I drove it about 3 miles to her house without a clue) but then made me some kick-that-cold's-ass 4-clove garlic soup with fresh rye croutons. Yummy. I was crashed out in bed by 9:30.

While I sweated for 15 hours, I missed a GREAT party put on by Hitgirl and Diesel for the opening of the Diesel Clothing store downtown. It included FREE drinks, hundreds of hottie straight and queer urban hipsters, beat boys and the Tour DJ for Scissor Sisters,
Sammy Jo. Damn that Hot Yoga!!! I’d rather swim in my own vermin than miss a party like that. At least ALL of my friends got go out and play. And here’s a few pics that Christine took. Damn she’s good. More to come!

I was feeling better on Friday. However, when I woke up in the morning drenched in sweat I noticed a fungal growth on the corner of my lip. A few months ago I had found a similar unappealing growth under my armpit near my right breasteses. I went to the doctor who told me it was shingles, a rash caused by the chickenpox virus.

~ snippit from the internet so it must be true ~
You can only get shingles (Herpes Zoster) if you have previously had
chickenpox. After having chickenpox the virus lies dormant in the nerves, and shingles occurs when it is revitalised in one particular nerve to the skin, thus explaining the way it affects a clearly demarcated band of skin only.

Usually the cause is a decrease in your body's natural resistance, which may come through other infections, stress, being generally run down, or occasionally, when the body's immune defences are affected by certain drugs or other immune deficiencies.

~ end snippit ~

I’ve ruled out the ‘are affected by certain drugs or other immune deficiencies’ because that’s impossible. So I blame stress.

I’ve missed two things going on this weekend (The Diesel party and Whitney’s Bday party .. including a Whitney bday kiss!!) but I still have two DJ gigs to keep me busy, Michelle’s Sobriety party tonight and Baltic Room tomorrow night. However, I have a very unsightly patch of FUNGUS on my FACE that will be a lovely addition to the cute little outfit I was going to wear on Thursday but will save for Sunday instead (hey, at least I don’t have to do laundry).

So two things to do today … go to get my tire changed and then go to Fred Meyer to buy makeup, which is something I haven’t bought since I gave up penises in 1998.

Which reminds me. Does anyone else find Loreal’s marketing slogan ironic? I saw the commercial when I was watching the Golden Globe awards where the slogan states ‘You’re worth it’. And yet the company makes millions of dollars a year off the fact that billions of women throughout the western world believe that without their product, they aren’t.

Drunk in Dance Fest

LSC on Saturday was a drunkin’ dance fest! The night was starting out super slow, dead even, and at 12:15 or so, Kendall and I thought the nasty weather was scaring people off. Then all of a sudden, either I was drunk or TONS of people magically appeared! It was a great night after that. Kendall and Julie Herrera rocked the house. I enjoyed my 2nd set, though for some reason my hand kept hitting the on-off switch on the turntable which causes the record’s beats per minute to slowly decrease. So the song ends up sounding like this ‘git yo freak on, git yo freak on, gotta gottta gottttaa ggiiit yoooouuurrr freaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkkkkk ooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnn’ until it stops. So about 3 times in my headphones and TWICE live the song did that. It’s all very obvious and VERY embarrassing, but the crowd just smiled and kept dancin’. Even during the last time it happened, when I couldn’t get the record to back to the correct BPM. Wups! And for the record, that happened most often during my first set when I wasn't intoxicated. So I think it was just some wierd hand thing.

But lots of peeps showed up, including Brooke & Walt with a ton of dancers! Liz and Lauri also came down from Catwalk to support! And there was a surprise appearance by Bishop. I was so surprised to see him in fact, that I spilled his brand-new drink trying to give him a hug ‘hello’. Wups!!

See, the great thing about being the DJ is that you get tons of free drinks. But the problem with being a DJ is that you get tons of free drinks! I was smart enough not to drive home, but not quite smart enough to realize that it’s a bad idea to leave your record case full of vinyl in your trunk in the middle of Pioneer Square all night long. Um, hello? Even when Julie said, ‘are you sure you want to leave those in there?’ I was like, ‘Ssuuurre, no big deal, shhiiit’. So my babies sat in the trunk ALL night.

Now, a vinyl case holds sentimental, fiscal and stylistic value. Not only was the case a gift (and covered with stickers that are irreplaceable), but it fits over 100 records, which at $6 to $15 a pop can add up to quite a bit. Plus! The countless during-work hours that I slaved away listening to tracks on dancerecords, satellite records or primal in order to find my own personal style is unimaginable. So when I woke up in the morning and realized that I’d put my babies in danger, I was utterly disappointed with myself. I have nobody to blame except Julie, and she’s already covered her ass by asking me if I was sure and forcing me to make a bad decision TWICE. I got up quickly, sucked down 2 huge glasses of water and then caught the 71 to 2nd and Washington where my babies slept soundly in Kiya’s bonnet, undisturbed. Whew!

The thing that I didn’t realize at the time was that my new digital camera that my parents bought me, er, I mean Santa brought for me at Christmas must have fallen out of my pocket somewhere. There’s tons of great pics from LSC that night that I can’t show you which totally bums me out and makes me want to call my mom and apologize profusely. Hopefully it will turn up, but if not, keep your eye out for illegal on-line photos of me nude. Wups!!!

And yes, I was hung over all day on Sunday. I hate alcohol.

Weekend Hops! (or should I say 'hopes?')

(Fri Jan 14)

If you are LUCKY enough to be in Vancouver B.C. (like Steve & Cheryl) you should not miss LTJ Bukem at Sonar in B.C. Jaisin introduced me to Bukem a few years ago and I've never been able to find Drum 'n Bass quite like it. Suggestions anyone?

If you are in Seattle ~

Mingle with me at SeeSound Lounge for Happy Hour 6-9pm! I won't be playing, just hanging out and celebrating my last day at my current employment (yes, I have a day job). I start my new job on Monday!

Then head over to Contour for a Tsunami Relief Benefit*! SF Spundae dj Taj, DJ Chronus, Carl Thompson and Scott Keith. I totally ditched out on Bishop last week when he went to a Tsunami Relief Benie at Element. I was in my sweats and NOT a rockstar.

(Sat Jan 15)
LA Kendall, Julie Herrera and Myself will be playing Vivid at Last Supper Club! Rumors that Ginger Vaughn is in town! This will be the first time Ginger and I are on the decks together!

If are thinking more Dancehall and Raggae on Saturday, check out a new night at Mirabeau Room. Papa Far-I, DJ Advent from Six Degrees Records and DJ Anshul the Bollywood Prince spinning conscious Hip Hop and Bhangra Beats to get you in the groove. Mirabeau Room always has a different kind of music vibe. Please check them out sometime.

(Sun Jan 16)
Derek informs me that he's off baby duty on Sunday and is hitting up Baltic Room for Expansions LIVE! Seattle's running electronic mixshow broadcasting live! Legendary Seattle Dj's: Dj Riz, Masa, Kid Hops Limited $5 online presale.

Dirty Little Secret

I'll let you all in on a little secret. This post is inspired by a post from The Temple of Divine Disenchantment's post 'that's what friends are for'.

The secret friend in the club scene is not the bartender, the dj, the slut nor the doorman. It's the hidden person, the Promoter. The Promoter has the door tickets, drink tickets, multiple dj's phone numbers, promotes parties in multiple clubs and of course know all the sluts. The best thing about it is, the Promoter really needs you. And the more hot friends you have to bring into the club, the more they need you and the more generous to you they will be.

I learned this from Roseann, who had VIP entry to 1015 Folsom in 2000 on New Years Eve.

Snowboarding and DJ’ing do not mix… unless you are in Whistler

On Saturday I bit off a little more than I could chew! I was asked to DJ at a birthday party for Liz on Saturday night at the Double Header. But Saturday day I also thought it would be a good idea to head up to Stevens Pass for my first snowboard day of the season. In retrospect, snowboarding and DJ’ing on the same day is a bad idea for a few different reasons. One is that I could break my leg before I get a chance to ‘break a leg.’ The other is that by the end of the day, even if my legs aren’t broken, my arms will be!

:: The day went something like this ::

6:30! Get up! Holy Shit. It’s still dark!
6:50 Filling up the
Camelback. It’s still got Playa dust on it!

PRESS: Vinyl Vixens Featured in The Tablet

When you get a chance, pick up the latest Tablet magazine. They did a spread on some fantastic local Northwest female DJ's including myself, Misha and DJ Girl 6!

http://www.tabletmag.com/95/features/95_vinyl_vixens.shtml

Special thanks to Renee for taking the pic of me that was featured in the article. She's also the artist in this
pic at the same party which is the best DJ photo taken of me thus far! A word of Caution: This is NOT a work-safe pic. (And, no, I'm not the nude one. It's actually a poster).

Happy F*ckin’ New Yea!

I have a friend named Chrissy that I met in Ireland back in the day. Chrissy is from Queens, New York, and she has that accent, too. One year, I met up with her and her two sisters in San Francisco to celebrate the New Year. They introduced me to a saying that has always rang true, because if anything CAN go wrong on New Years, it WILL. But it always turns out great regardless. So like they say in Queens, NY, ‘Happy F*ckin’ New Yea’.

In the true New Years spirit, my gig at the Capitol Club was definitely one of the most challenging gig’s I’ve had as of yet… and one of the most rewarding. (Compare this to the Boston Luftansa Holiday party where the Hotel we were at had two sound guys to do all the work, and I got to use the new Rane Empath Mixer which was ... to quote a phrase from Elletee 'Tits!'.) It started of at 5pm when I arrived to get the gear all set up. There was a slight technical challenge … the DJ equipment was about 15 feet away from the house sound and I needed to find a cable that would reach that far. I found one after a few hours thanks to the help of Tippit, Sheiny and Bishop. To work it out, I hooked up Sheiny’s 35ft long RCA cable to an RCA extension adapter of Bishops, then hooked the other end of that RCA cable to the house sound using RCA to ¼ inch converters. Then we were in Buziness!

Another challenge was that I had 4 hours of music to play and I totally misinterpreted the kind of music that the patrons would want to hear that night. I brought quite a bit of music in the wrong genera. For anyone that DJ’s (unless you are someone like Digweed), 4 hours is a pretty long set. Plus I thought it would be more ambient kind of stuff. So I brought mostly downtempo and mellow hip hop. But when the staff asked me to keep the BPMs (Beats Per Minute) a bit higher, I was a little spooked for a minute. This scenario made it so I couldn’t help but wonder* ~ ‘How best does a DJ in a non-dance floor venue keep the vibe up and happy enough so people are having fun but not wanting to leave to go dancing?’ Luckily I’ve been to enough of Miss Kick’s gigs to figure out what was best to pull out of my record bag.

In the end, I believe Tippit said of the set that I ‘went around the world in 80 ways’. I played some hip hop that I borrowed from Sheiny, some downtempo that I borrowed from T-bear and Elletee and I had brought enough of my House music to keep the Headz happy, though it was my darker stuff and not some of the lighter, deep house stuff. I was very pleased at the response I received from both the staff and the clientele.

By the way, the staff at the Capitol Club was by far the nicest, most enjoyable staff that I’ve ever worked with in Seattle. I definitely have to give a HUGE thanks to Verna for hooking me up the gig through the Hitgirls. When I arrived at 9:30 for the actual gig, Tippit presented me with a Water and a Red Bull. Fantastic! Also later when I was almost passing out from not having time to eat dinner, I had a plate of the Carnaroli Risotto which was extremely yummy, though if you are lactose intolerant, I do recommend sticking to pizza. Plus the staff was super nice to my parents and long-time friends of the family, Terry and Bob. (Terry has known me since I was 10) who drove all the way from T-town to support me. And I do have to mention that my mom was NOT pleased by the t-shirt I was sporting in my Baltic Room pics. Yes, I should have warned her that my humor can be somewhat…dirty in a very shocking way. Sorry, mom. Love you!

So in the end, even though I was a little unprepared (the patrons never knew!) and I didn’t get to flirt with the hot bartender as much as I wanted, it was one of the most challenging but best times I’ve ever had as a DJ. I was really glad to ring in 2005 with everyone at Capitol Club, including some of the party peeps (here’s some pics), my friend T-Mack who showed up after a wedding, and a nice House Head named Derrick who I tried to give a CD to, but he left before I could give it to him.

Thanks to all and Happy F*ckin’ New Yea!

*‘Sex and the City’ reference -- BTW, after just finishing the entire series of ‘Sex and the City’ on DVD, it is now my opinion that S.A.T.C. is one of the best television series’ ever written.
