With performances by:

Aerialists, contortionist, illusionists, fire
Pure Cirkus started out as a Seattle based piercing/suspension group called P.U.R.E. (people undergoing real experiences). Over the course of 3 years the group grew larger and larger as it began to perform shows both public and private, pulling together many talented performers who strived to push the limits of the human mind and body in an ancient art form that dates back to the oldest mummy found to date until it finally evolved into what is now PURE CIRKUS. As P.U.R.E entered into its 3rd year performing all over Seattle it spawned its own fire troupe, run by Xavier Frost and Jennifer Morgensen. Soon enough it began to take on all forms of entertainers such as jugglers, clowns and other creeds of artists that simply wanted to place that they could entertain and grow as a performer. So began Pure Cirkus. The group that began as a private get together of friends to create an inspiring personal experience born out of our primordial society has transformed into Pure Cirkus. A blend of clowns, fire, suspension/piercing, dancers, acrobats, musicians and artists from all over that have come together to build what we hope will be a long lasting cirkus that will come to entertain people for generations.

In the Theatre:

Breaks to Tribal Progressive through Hard Techno and Psytrance
Osiris Indriya (Iboga Records, Oracle Gatherings, IOSIS Art Party) is a legend of the West Coast Underground Dance scene. He has been featured with underground artists such as Brian, Brad, and Trevor of L.A. Moontribe, Manoj of Uplift in Portland, OR, trance goddess Phoenix Olivia in Vancouver B.C., and Lorin (bassnectar) from Santa Cruz/SF, CA. Osiris has also been featured along side recording artists Human Blue (Spiral Trax, chill code - Sweden), Ganga Giri (Australia) and SunControlSpecies (Zenon, Iboga - Australia), as well as Antix, Beat Bizarre, and DJ Banel from Danish Progressive label Iboga Records where he is now an official label DJ. He is a weekly resident at Contour Night Club in Seattle for IMPULSE Thursdays. All this while playing at forest, desert, beach, and indoor gatherings, club nights, and festivals up and down the west coast, as well as internationally including the Double 6 in Kuta, Bali and Shambhala Music Fesival in Nelson, Canada. Driven to take Seattle to the next level, Osiris has been deep into creating several projects. He has teamed up with Infinite Connections to bring the best of Europe’s tribal progressive trance music and world class art to the Pacific Northwest in a series of events called IOSIS Art Parties. As co-founder of the Oracle Gatherings, he is bringing a new paradigm in a growing dance community by integrating with the Northwest’s mythical undercurrent. All this has helped inspire the release of his all original progressive and downtempo CD, "Reach Within".

Tribal House and Breaks
Michael Manahan (Oracle Gatherings) has been involved in the underground visionary arts culture in Seattle for over 12 years as a DJ and event and music producer. Hailing from the burgeoning San Francisco house scene of the early 90s, Michael co-produced the original northwest full-moon celebrations lasting 5 years. Holding several residencies and as co-founder of the Oracle Gatherings, Michael has led many up and down the west coast through their dance journeys, from San Francisco to Vancouver, B.C. through Ashland and Portland and even Hawaii. His style remains deep, tribal house dipped in funk, peppered with bhangra, accompanied by beats that hit you like a rippling earthquake. With an eclectic composition, he crosses boundaries by weaving together a confluence of musical styles, but almost always with funky tribal and dubby influences at the roots. http://www.michaelmanahan.com

Progressively psychedelic to the core
Amanita (IOSIS Art Party) has been a DJ in Seattle for over 5 years focusing on the uplifting and driving sounds of psychedelic trance. Having played up and down the West coast with a who’s who list of international psychedelic producers and DJs such as Talamasca, Oforia, Shakta, Penta, Atomic Pulse, Wizzy Noise and Ticon, Amanita has shifted his focus to the more progressive side of psychedelic dance music.

Stylish tracks served with smooth-as-silk mixing and a celestial bassline

Jen Woolfe (Session) A native of Seattle, Jen Woolfe's seductive styles of House, Downtempo and Electronic Dance seamlessly blend daring vocals & erotic sounds over delicious beats. This enchantress draws you into her realm with hypnotic grooves, teases you with a hint of Tech, and melts you into the dance floor. http://www.jenwoolfe.com

In the Marquee Lounge:

Hippity Hoppity Funky Breaks and Drum’n’Bass
Shapeshifter (Static Factory Media/Buddhaful) as flagship turntable artist for Static Factory Media, Shapey continues to bring the art of turntablism to the world of electronic music. Known for hip-hop and nu skool breaks, down tempo and D&B, Shapey's distinct style of DJing is a must see. Striving to utilize the turntable as an instrument, Shapeshifter is also a strong member of the ten-piece funk/improv band, Marmalade (
http://www.buddhaful.com), with a residency at Tost Lounge in Fremont for three years. With years of turntable artistry and event production under his slipmat, Shapey has helped create the magic of Fremont's Mardi Gras Masqurade Ball 2005, Critical Mass-Seattle's Burningman Recompression 2004, Phoenix Fest 2005, and produces the 6-year running Gathering of the Ram. Shapeshifter has played with many of Seattle's premier talent such as KJ Sawka, Freeschool featuring Reggie Watts, Darek Mazzone, FourthCity, and rocked such venues as The House of Blues and Club Ice in Las Vegas, Le Bunker (Rio de Janeiro), Le Floride's 30th Anniversary Party (Nantes, France) and IOT Disco Teche in Tarragonna, Spain.

A surprise waiting to happen
Phidelity
aka Kris Northern is a veteran psy-chill DJ/producer from San Francisco. Hailing back from the early 90's rave scene, Kris developed the taste for psychedelic soundscapes and beats primarily of the storytelling flavor and has since forged his own unique style of mixing incorporating a wide palette of musical styles and tying his sets together with theme based storytelling elements.

Mixing techno and IDM just the way you like it
Greg Skidmore (Oscillate/thePGSeries) Along with Paul Edwards and Patrick Haenelt, Greg Skidmore brings in world-class producers and DJs through the auspices of their PG Series and Oscillate weeklies, respectively. Behind the Technics, Greg has earned a reputation as Seattle's foremost authority on esoteric electro and as a connoisseur of quality IDM. In fact, heads have started calling these styles “Skidmore music” due to his absolute mastery of them. All this and the dude just started shaving last year. (Dave Segal)

Smooth Downtempo

Cory Michael (einsoff) has had a fascination with rhythm since the tender age of 6 when he began drum lessons. He was so into the "drum set" that he swore off any beats not made "the real way". Those words tasted soooo good as he danced to house for the first time some years later. Another large influence at a young age was hip hop beats; maybe that is the root of his fascination with broken beats. His love of dancing brought him to DJing and he started dabbling after being inspired by the best of the Seattle underground scene. He started playing house of all sorts (whatever records he could borrow), then worked his way into breaks and down tempo. He still listens to all varieties of music, but anything with a broken beat holds a special place in his heart.

And spiritual reading with one of the most gifted clairvoyant/psychic/medium Seattle has... Spookee
I am a psychic medium: that means I see the future and spirits. I also read cards and give insightful, intuitive advice. In a reading with me you will learn that no one ever really dies, that everything is interconnected and that in your darkest hour, in a room with no other living being, you are never alone!

wash, rinse, repeat

Its Christmas time again and malls are packed. Seeing as this is the first time in 15 years that I haven't had a job (i.e. xmas cash), I've been storming my brain as to what to get my family for Christmas. Tho I don't do credit cards anymore, I do have a card for the Bon Macy's. Because you never know when you'll need to buy a suit. And even if I cut up the credit card, I can still convieniently use my name and social to make a purchase anytime I want, 24-hours a day, just anytime my little heart desires. Still, the thought of herding downtown amidst the crowd to ride the cold, shiny ferris wheel and buy glowy toys from competing Santas (yes, they were selling them on the streets -- 'Oh, Jonny's going to that Rave thing, lets get him some flashy balls and a pack of blow pops*...) ' was not appealing. So, my next thought --- Kanji! Perfect. But where on earth can I buy Kanji? I could look for some online, but it may not get here through the mail in time for the exact day Jesus was born. Or, I could traverse the midsection of the South Center Mall (and peer longingly into my favorite, but well beyond my budget boutique, The Buckle). But ew. Another mall. I'd been thinking so hard about this for the last week, that it hadn't even occured to me that I could simply draw the Kanji myself and it would cost only the amount of a pen and paper. It's just crazy that my first resource was the mall (ok, it was the Internet. You have to give me credit for being somewhat Evolved). But my second resource was the mall. I was stuck within my own container of consumerism long enough to forget that I have two hands that can craft a gift. That is scary. Even those of us who are privvy to the social behavior resulting from a society based on the buying and selling of material goods are prone to wash, rinse, repeat.

Euro-Boston Cherry Pop Vibe

Momo and I had a great time in Boston the last few days. Richie Rich hired me once again to DJ the Luftansia Holiday party, and we did so in style. Most of the kidz that work at the terminal there are European, so the track selection at the end of the night was more like the Electro Pop remixes that I pulled for Cherry last Friday (read: electro fresh) than what you'd hear at an old-fashioned American Holiday party (read: disco drab). Of course, the most popular are the ones that fuse both (read: pop electro disco dance), like the club remix of Tom Jones' 'Sex Bomb'. I'll see if I can pull together a more proper Boston Blog, but in the meantime, please pop in to Creme on Saturday for after hours as we re-incarnate the Euro-Boston Cherry Pop vibe.

NEW MIX! san francisco soul

Usually my mixes originate from me just starting up some records and pushing record. I guess I'm kinda lazy in that way. If they turn out pretty good, I post them. For this one, I mixed for about an hour and then pushed record. I think being warmed up really pays off.

This set is inspired by my friends at Deep House Originals. The first Saturday of each month at Baltic and every Friday at Temple Billiards, they bring the old skool House vibe of Chicago legends to our coastal town. Craig Alexander, Mark Grant, Theo Parish, Glen Underground and Rick Wilhite.. and in the near future, among others, Minx! I started thinking about who my influences are of House music and how West Coast I really am. While I devour anything that DJ Heather (Chicago), Robsoul Recordings (France) or Ty Tek (Denver) even hum, my Heart is in Seattle. But my Soul, my friends, is definately in San Francisco.

On the Edge of Unmotivation

It's 10:42 pm on a Friday and there's an after party that I'd like to go to. But it doesn't really start until 2am. It's only 3 hours away, but I'm at my peak of motivation drop. I'm really a day person. So what does one do to motivate? Two glasses of wine at dinner didn't help much.

I text some friends to see who is out on the town. Good little kids doing good little things. There's enough interest that I wouldn't have to go alone. Damn.

I refer to the gift that Jessica Star gave me today, a deck to lead my way. I pull a card. It says 'The Hermit'. She says, 'Don't take it too seriously'. I saw a license plate yesterday that said 'Hybern8te'. Do I read too much into things?

'Keep your bra on,' says Masil, 'Once the bra is off, it's all over.' Too true.

But the state of my underwear is beyond my control. Once you commit to a relationship, some sacrifices are made. 'I'm thinking of going to an afterparty tonight, honey, is that okay?' 'Of course, lover.' says Pink. She's so fucking supportive.

Sokolicky pops her head into the room. 'Are you going to that afterparty?' Grrrr. I'm ambushed by my own ambition. Too bad after parties don't start at 2pm. Of course, some of the good ones do.

We pop in re-runs of 'In Living Color', delivered to my door by Netflix. Don't even have to go to the video store. I love it. We are half asleep when Momo & Andrew wake us. 'Going to the afterparty? We brought Coors lite.'

'I give it two smokes up in a circle', I say. An hour later, we're all asleep. I'm sure the afterparty was a fabulous time, but I enjoyed an organic pleasure -- sleeping soundly.

The Key to Shaping a Young Girl's Life

(Nov 22, 2005)

On Friday I saw that there were $35 tickets still available for the Gwen Stafani concert last night at the Key. So naturally, I bought the $80 ones. I figured, if I was gonna do a show like that, I'd do it up right. We had great seats, though, in the 115 section which was to the left of the stage. There was a little girl beside us who was there with her dad. She had to be only 9 or 10, almost the same age that I was when my mom took me to one of my first concerts, Madonna's True Blue. WOW! My mom said between that show and the George Michael's Faith concert a few months later, she's never heard little girls scream more in her life. What does seeing Madonna live on stage, or even idolizing Madonna, at the age of 11 do to young girls? Well, basically, it gave us the courage to be ourselves, without boundries. To challenge the rules that society has placed upon us and express ourselves in any way we want, be it in a career, through a creative outlet, or using our voices. The father who took his daughter to Gwen Stafani said to her, "That could be you up there someday". The truth is, thanks to the gift that he's given her, it already is.

New (and old) Blog Links

I used to have Masil Q. and Bionic Chic's blog links up, but at some point they dissapeared. And I'm so lazy that it took me this long to put them back up! But I was inspired also by my friends Nami and Brian who are over in Japan teaching English to Japanese students. Nami was my first roomate in college, if you can believe that. She was a cheerleader from Tacoma and I was a band geek from Steilacoom. There was no cable in the dorms that first year, so we'd stay up late and watch recordings of my favorite MTV videos for hours and giggle. We had very little in common, but we remained great friends. Now, she is SO not a cheerleader (except deep down) and I'm SO not a band geek (except deep down). Her and Brian are an amazing couple, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to read about their travels by blog. I also added one of the first blogs I ever read, Little. Yellow. Different., as well as two of the most meaningful to me, Moby and Margret Cho. Enjoi!

PS -- If Bionic Chic doesn't come see me while she's in Seattle this week I will be beating her ass with a rubber turkey.

Why are you a drunk?

I've been in Hermitville, which is movie heaven. Yesterday Pink and I watched the first two Harry Potter movies to get ready for my family's annual Harry Potter Thanksgiving, where we eat loads of fattning foods and then go see the new Harry Potter movie at the local theatre. Each year I read the book before the movie, so this week I started the 4th book. My brother James has, of course, read all of them and can probably by now recite them from memory in Latin. Last year I was really attracted to Hermonie, which totally tripped me out because she's only supposed to be 13 in the movie but must be like 16 in real life, which is only two years older than my brother (unless you read his myspace add). I know it's wrong on so many levels. First, of course she's underage. Secondly, because I've been watching her since she was like 10. Ew. And most importantly because it massively violates the 10-year rule which we all know is vital to living a healthy lifestyle. But let's face it, nobody in America knew how to pronounce Hermoine before Emma and JK Rowling made it famous. When she turns 18, she may move to my top 10 list for females, which is contrived mostly of British actors and is, of course, topped by Kate Winslet. I know you feel me.

'Why am I a drunk? Is that what you really wanted to ask me? Then this is our first date or our last, up till now I wasn't sure it was either'*. Today is my Monday. You see, Pink works retail which means she works weekends. So Thursday is Monday, Friday is her Tuesday, you get the idea. I missed her too much when I worked Business Hours, plus they made me wear bras. So, I decided to work weekends i.e. be a DJ. That's really the only reason. Really.

( Thur Nov 10 )

A Little, boy, Crazy!

Yesterday, when I returned to a house filled with 4 empty kegs, bottles stacked Sarah Cynthia Silvia Stout-style in our back foyer, garbage bags torn from PVC piping and a head-less Jason sitting in the rocking chair in our smoking garage, I heard my kitty meowing loudly from the neighbor's hard. He was hiding underneath their house, scared to jump over the fence and witness 400 people crunched into various corners of the Leschi Lounge. That's how I felt, too, after our Groovin' Ghoules V Halloween party.... Here's why -- a clip from the Evite that shows how many people ended up on our guest list:

Yikes!.... I'm still a little in shock right now, and like Willow , all I can do in the aftermath is clean. Until some pictures come in (If you have some, please send to jen woolfe at gmail), I'll talk a little about our trip to San Francisco in Sept. Enjoy.

A Little Boy Crazy

During my SF trip last month, I had the fortune of spending a few crazy nights with Sokolicky's sis and her grrl friends, all in town from Prague. They were in SF for Sus's wedding, but for these girls, every night out on the town is a bacheloretty party.

Sokojuju and the Eurogrrls love boys. They also love traveling, fine dining, dancing, and drinking. They love each other, they love J-dub and Sokolicky, but mostly, they love boys. All kinds of boys. Tall, skinny, black yellow green. As long as they are fun . Or drunk.

The scheme is simple. First, a slice of the city . Then, a little rest and a lovely dinner followed by cocktails. Very soon, they spot some tasty treats, do some voodoo magic and voila! The boys are soon devising a plan to charm the pants off them.
'I know', they say, 'more drinks!' Little do they know they are under the Eurogrrls spell and the rest of the night is out of their hands!
The boys never know where the Eurogrrls will take them.
'Follow me', says Sokojuju.
Sometimes they go to a bar. Sometimes to a house party. Sometimes to an undisclosed location.
Every once in a while, the Eurogrrls are tricked! This time, it was a supposed house party, with quote, 'Everything you want.'
'Will there be dancing?' asks Nicola.
'Will there be drinks?' Asks Sokojuju.
'Will there be Men?' asks Kristina.
'Will we be treated like Rockstars?' asks J-dub.

'Yes,' they say.

But the Eurogirls were tricked! No dancing, no Rockstar treatment, no men ... and no party. We think those boys had cheerleader envy. So we did what any Eurogrrl would do. We drank their booze and left for a more exciting destination. So screw you.

The next day, the girls start fresh. A little rest, un caffè, and Voila! good as new. More sites of the city, dinner with friends only this time with cookies! Then off to the bars.

'Stop me before I hit on the cabbie.' says Kristina.
Nicola is behind the cabbie, much easier access.
But Sokojuju is in the front. Where are her hands??
The cabbie, drunk with love.
More boys and debauchery and a little taste of Americano.
'The bay is lovely, girls, but to find boys that really know how to party, come to Prague!'

Madame Peabody’s Dancing Academy for Young Ladies

While I can't remember what I did on Friday, I do remember that Saturday was an absolute blast. I DJ'd at a 'welcome home' party for my friend Kristi, who spent 2 months in Greece, that lucky bitch. We held the party, once again, at our favorite (muff) dive bar in Seattle, the Double Header. We love the D.H. Not only for it's whitty (baseball) name and it's $3 Alaskan Amber's, but for it's history and it's locals (and the fact that you can rent it out for nothin'). And even though we may only have a few dozen people there for what we've begun to call 'Boobs and Beers', we're always bringing the vibe. Here is a synopsis of how the evening went, thanks especially to photos by Masil Q.

Schoolin' Star and Momo on audio. Is there a female to female plugin?
Already the locals are giggin'.
Holla to all y'all, get on the dance
floor.
Ask and ye
shall.
My mom'll like this
photo.
Getting some Home Cookin' - one of my current fav
records.
A Rising
Star.
Masil flashes her burning man smile a year
early.
Mudd says, 'No really, I saw it myself. Sokolicky came straight outta
space'.
You can always spot the aliens by their
tails.
Should'n't you be getting me a
beer?
Twisted
sista's.
'Is the camera fuzzy or are we
drunk?'
Liz, the founder of Boobs and Beers.
'Git on down,
sista.'
Wade, Jenny and friends show
support.
Brad enjoys the D.H.
vibe.
The Fish is one hot water
mammal!
The Orphans and the locals, gettin'
down.
The Orphans and the locals, gettin' it
up!
Ah, another
alien!
Uh huh, that's
right.
Hei and Dry (yea,
sure).
The locals really do love us. Maybe too
much.
The artist at
work.
My new favorite
DJ photo, thanks Masil!!
After another night of fun, the dj
rests.

Boys and their CockTail

Parties. They are so fun. Unless you have to clean up after them. Of course, if you ever want to have a kick-ass party and NOT clean up... host a CockTail party. Ten minutes after the party is over, your liquor cabinets will be twice as stocked, your house will be cleaner than before the party started, there will be 3 pounds of assorted olives in the fridge, and you'll still have toilet paper. 'Hey now,' says Hei. I keep my kitchen clean just as good as any homo!

Richie Rich was in town from Boston, a perfect occation for some cocktails. I mean, I had to do SOMETHING kewl, considering a Holiday party that he booked me for landed me a free trip to Europe.

Doug tells Sokolicky, 'I've brought the booze, darling.'

J-dub is stoked to try out the new CD-J's, care of Cape Girl and Berry (caution: may contain tits).

Shein's gone Cuntry, but it's House music makes the room Happy.

Sokolicky receives orders from the mothership.
'Momo is an Orphan', it says. 'Turn Momo into a Rockstar'.
'Wait', says Sokolicky. 'She's already a
Rockstar.'
'Oops', says the mothership. 'Sorry, wrong guy. It's Pete! Turn Pete into a Rockstar.'

Unbeknownst to them, the breeders have been trapped in the glow closet. 'Ouch! The light!

Shein asks Momo, 'I could pass for gay, right?'
'Wait,'Hold up now!'

All in all, the cocktail party was a sucksess. And Richie Rich once again reminds us 'front and center, baby'. He's an origional Rockstar. 'I'm hungry,' he says, 'Anyone else feel like getting a Taco?'

PS A picture of the sunrise. To squash any rumors that our parties end before dawn.

NEW MIX! will spin for sushi

Missy took me to lunch last week and said she's listened to my online mixes so often that she can hear the mistakes. I promptly recorded her a new one. It's called 'Will Spin for Sushi'.

POP Quiz! Missy is the soul owner of a recording I did a LONG time ago on cassette tape. What is the name of the set?

Wanted to mention what a great time I had spinning at Pete's Decompression B-day party last week. I hope to post some pictures from that night soon. Also had a great time last night spinning at Richie Rich's 'Seattle loves you' bash at the Leschi Lounge. And why do most of the boys I know love Taco Bell after a night of the drinkie and dancie? Do they have Taco Envy?

Pumpin' up the Gems

I had a great time DJ'ing at Viceroy last night. At about 5pm, Zac called me to explain the format of the weekly Wednesday. 'Shaken not Stirred' is a night for DJ's to pull out their Gems regardless of genre and play to a chill and trendy crowd chatting on plush couches and an outdoor patio that catches the fragrance of the sea. I pulled out a dusty box of CD's from the far reaches of my closet consisting of about 50 album cases that have made it through high school crushes, college dorm pre-funks and what I call the 'Lilith phase.' Half of them were empty. Somehow I always manage to give all my favorite albums away. I love them so much that I give them away in hopes that everyone else will love them, too. But the ones that remained intact, along with some stunning House records I've obtained in the past 5 years, managed to fit in with the lovely vibe at Viceroy.

Minx, Chics, and Burning Man Pics

Thanks to all who made it out for DJ Minx at Contour afterhours and LSC on Sat. It was a great night and Minx had a super weekend in Seattle. Did I ever mention her addiction to one of the (many) best vegetarian restaurants in the city, Cafe Flora? I think Flora and the Hitgirls are her two of her favorite things about Seattle.

Last night I was a dirty girl. We went on a double date to a different kind of dance club in downtown Seattle. I don't have a lot of experience in that realm, but I do have to say that the staff was extremely friendly, the patrons were very respectable, and the dancers were very sexy and fun. I do have some passes for free entry left over (not that kind of entry), so if anyone wants one, gimme a holla via email. Do say hello to Peaches when you go down.

And alas, I finally have Burning Man pictures online for your enjoyment. I have to note that some of the photos are not ours and are not from this year, but the photographers in those cases are endorsed by the filename. Also please caution that some of these photos may contain tits. Even more exciting, though, is a program that Cape Girl told me about called Picasa that I should implement at some point to get rid of my nasty images page that only shows the directory instead of a nice photo gallery.

2nd annual Decibel Festival

If you are not aware, there is an electronic music festival held here in Seattle that is fabulous. It's called Decibel Festival, and it's huge. Please see the website for all the info about the festival. There are so many amazing artists performing, you should really get the weekend pass. Though I recommend all of them, these are the few I've seen in the past. So please show support for Seattle and the electronic music scene by attending at least one show. Chances are once you've seen it, you'll stick around for more.

Am I ever coming home?

Masil Q. asked me if I'm ever come home. The truth is, yes, I'm heading home tomorrow morning. I've had the craziest adventures here in San Francisco over the last week. It would be nice if I had voice recognition software so I could write the blog entries as they happen. I have to say that decompressing from Burning Man away from my friends and home was really hard. Luckily I had about 10 prospective people to meet up with here in SF. Also, Sokolicky made it out for 4 days which helped a lot. I received the most eclectic view of the city throughout the week. I feel like I got a taste of what it's like to live in the life of Castro, Mission, Nob Hill and Presidio. I did the tourist thing with Alcatraz and ate amazing food at French, Mexican and Sushi restaurants. I met very kewl people here in the city and was able to meet up with Seattle friends that are now living here, including Steph and Jamie. I've only got 1 minute left on my internet card, so I'm heading. I miss you guys and will see you soon!

On the Soft Track

Music is so prevelant in my life, it kind of surprises me sometimes. It's virtually everywhere, I mean literally Virtual, as in Virtual Reality. When I arrived at Sheiny's house on Tuesday night, his friend and co-worker Tom was set out in front of the computer with is piano keyboard. Shein and Tom work for a company that has developed a 3D Virtual World program called 2nd Life. This 2nd life is a virtual chance to remake your personality and live in a world much like our own. Tom was cyber sitting is a pleasant court yard wth two or three others, the sun shining lightly on the neon green grass. He was speaking into the microphone and playing piano for his virtual audience, who are virtual real people listening to actual music from their actual computer monitors. Of course I could only hear one side of the conversation. So in between songs I heard,

'Aw thank you'.
pause
'Well yes, I would say so'
pause
'Only when I'm -'
pause
'Well, I wouldn't go as far as to -'
pause
Laugh 'Aw, you're very sweet'

Shein DJ'ed in the 2nd life yesterday and I threw on a few tracks as well. He played at a club called 'The Bunker' that a user built in the program over the course of a Saturday. The floors moved back and forth to wierd colors and the chairs were made out of granades. Shein hooked up his real-world turntables and played some of the records out of my real life bag to an audience of about 8. They had programmed ways to dance on the floor or in their chairs, spin fire, and even use glow sticks. Shein received virtual money that can be used inside the game, and even traded for real money here on Earth. There are even burning man festivals in 2nd life. It's a very trippy place.

-

In the real real world, Shein has been working on some tracks for a record label that he is starting with a friend here in SF named Henry Navarro. Henry has been releasing records since 1997, mostly on the Urbanloops label. They have two house tracks ready to be pressed to vinyl, and I was lucky to be invited in on some of the finishing touches last night. Henry uses the software program Reason (and many others) along with actual instruments to record tracks. Being able to watch them work (I even have a voice cameo) was a treat.

Feelin' the Burn

Two days out of Burning Man 2005 and I've temporarily settled into an apartment on Washington & Hyde in San Francisco. I decided to visit Sheiny here to decompress from my time in the desert and to allow another small taste of the city. SF has been pulling me quite a bit in the last year, as this is the second time in the last 6 months that I find myself in the shadow of the Golden Gate bridge.

Now, staring at the computer screen, it's virtually impossible to recollect the events of the last two weeks in any sort of order. Currently, only a few memorable events weigh clearly in my head: Happening upon a DJ Thursday night who overtook a crowd of hundreds with epical melodies and a lever in the DJ booth that spit fire 10 feet into the air at his whim. Spinning my own vinyl with Robb Green at Playa-go-Round on Friday night. Stopping mid-pee on Wednesday after hearing a familiar Denver name, only to be whisked away within minutes to an intimate gathering where Michael Franti composed his peace. Emerging from a wooden tube filled with assorted stuffed animals on Saturday morning to the 3rd most memorable sunrise of my entire life. And an invite to one of the most kickin' camps on the Deep End of the playa.

Once again I met new friends from all over the world -- the Zu kids from Seattle, Victoria & Crew from London and SF, two Cool Bus Irish School kids from Dublin, a silly couple sharing Jager and vodka tonics from Salt Lake City. I helped devirgininze three of my own -- Sokolicky, Monaco & Freedom. I connected and reconnected with friends close to home, including Demetreus & Kimber Xara, Delicioso, Sean Dee and Mr. Green. And I watched my partner in love and life shine her universal light.

But the magic of the playa sometimes takes time to close its lessons. And there is one event that still looms dark in my heart. For that I wrote a poem in hopes that the golden circle, now ashes within the pile of the Temple, will soon rejoin our infinity once again.

'They say the desert makes or breaks relationships.
Of that, I can clearly see.
Lines once drawn in thick charcoal of emotion
are easily blurred between sleep-deprived thoughts
and drug-enduced experience.
A planet that sleeps so separate from reality
allows so easily
thoughts of persons, places and feelings left on Earth
to slip soundly through the cracks of temptation.
We leave our comfort willingly
in order to re-write rules so confidently placed before us
that we'd forgotten if they were truely our beliefs
or ideals layed out to oppress.
What seemed so right in a place where love lives free
now leaves my heart, once opened bright in the desert heat,
feeling faulted, torn heavily, undone.'

DJ Superhighway

On Sunday morning I woke up and walked into my kitchen. Curled up asleep on my couch was Robb Green, a DJ I met years ago after playing at Hoyt's Pub in Queen Anne with Sensory Effect. We'd been trying to connect before his move to San Francisco at the end of the week, and my living room on a sleepy Sunday morning is as good a place as any. We chatted in the kitchen with Masil Q. and Pink as I cooked up some breakfast burritos and Robb retraced his going away extravaganza, which started last week and looks like it will continue into October. "It's wierd", he said "I've been running into people on the street that I haven't seen in years. And they're like, 'what's up?' and I'm like, "I'm moving to San Francisco!". He's set on a place, a job, and already a DJ gig there and in Portland on the way.

"I gotta show you this track", he said, and headed back to the living room. "But first, did you ever notice how INXS's Kick mixes straight out of this
Metro Area?" For the next few hours, Rob Green went off, playing one of the smoothest sets to emerge from the Leschi Lounge. Part rock, part punk, all dance. Punk Rock Disco, an obvious genre to be spawned from a city of Grunge forced by a 'no dance ordinance' to find refuge at Raves. And Rob Green was on it. Tight.

All bubbly on burritos and bop, we started on a trek to a quaint beach down by Seward Park to Mimosas & BBQ promised to us night before. Unfortunately, we'd completely underestimated the length of the Lake Washington and Rob, a club kid, was not wearning comfy raver shoes. Masil Q. spouted, "These better be some gawddam good Mimosa's!."

After a call to Sokolicky and refreshing stop at the Ice Cream man, we were saved just in time to take a right on 50th and 'so long' to the sparkling blue smile of Lake Washington. We chilled on the beach for a while and napped in the sun until Rob jumped up, "I have to get to a radio show at 6!" Packing up the punch, we headed to the car and taxied Rob to hand off to his next gig, a BBQ and beats party for Remote Control Radio that airs every Sunday on Oseao.com. "After the set this morning, I'm all warmed up," he said, and Punk Rock Disco made its way into airwaves history.

Stay
tuned for Robb Green on Remote Control Radio, brought to you by Shameless and Oseao.com.

See Rob Green at
Delerium in San Francisco on Sept. 10th and in Seattle at the Decibel Festival Sept 22-25.

regarding motivation...

I threw away two krispy kreme donuts this morning by wrapping them in the same plastic bag along with a piece of styrofoam and I found myself wondering which one would decompose quicker.

On a somewhat related note, I've also found it far more motivating to do an Ab workout while watching Suicide Girls as compared to Abs of Steel.
