NEXT GIGs: A New Union
Seattle and San Francisco will be united for me after these next two weeks. Due to a naturally occuring coincidence (if there is such a thing), both Robb Green (Shameless) and Scott Binder (Cybersutra/djscottbinder.com) will be blessing our city with their seatown/bay area blend of beats. The union on Friday Dec 14th (er, Sat morning to be exact) at 2am with Cybersutra, 'a live electronic music duo that Scott Binder created with his good friend and talented producer, Naite Heal. CyberSutra is designed to bring even more elements of live performance into dance music while reaching out around the globe to collaborate with top vocalist on sensational new tracks'. Myself and Robb will be following their performance with a tag team set.
This is only a warm-up for the following night, Saturday Dec 15th, when Robb and I light up Spy at Hengst Studios. This all-night party, Resident Evil, includes Ben Shelton, Love Virus, DJ Sloth, Danger, Dave Bloomfield, Michelle Burch, and many many more.
Then, on Tues Dec 18th, I'll be on a flight to SF to thank the fair city for lending me two of its best. After a stop by Qool, to check out the most infamous happy hour on the west coast on Wednesday, you can find me DJ'ing at Supper Club on Friday Dec 21st with Michael Anthony. Don't party too hard for the week, because the grand finale will be Robb's birthday, Sat Dec 22nd at Annie's Social Club. There we might share our final Tag Team set for 2007 or I may go the set solo. Only the Universe knows the outcome!
So to Summarize:
NEXT GIGs:
Friday Dec 14th @ Contour Afterhours w/ Cybersutra & Robb Green
Saturday Dec 15th @ Spy at Hengst Studios
Friday Dec 21st @ Supper Club (SF) with Michael Anthony
Saturday Dec 22nd @ Annie's Social Club (SF) for Robb Green's bday blowout
Also Catch Cybersutra @ the Vortex on C-89.5 at 8pm Fri Dec 14th!!

Underworld's Undies
When I subscribed to Remix magazine a year ago under the guise of my cover band, Jen Woolfe & the Happy Pervs, I had no idea what the tech any of the articles were talking about. Since then, I've been studying Ableton's Live and Propellerhead's Reason and finally the acronyms are starting to make sense. It's a Music Tech Geek Mag. Perfect.
I've been making great strides in learning production, far greater than I expected. I still feel like I'm in the first room of my mega-warehouse of audio art supplies, but I'm finally able to recognize tools and organize ideas. I recently realized that Reason is an instrument. Sure, I read the words VST a hundred times, but it didn't click until I started playing with Dr. Rex's Loop player. (I know Reason isn't actually a VST, as that is a standard, but that's what is so confusing!). Reason is a Virtual Studio. Literally! It consists of an imaginary rack with imaginary synthesizers, drum machines, players, mixers, samplers and signal processors that look like the real thing. You can even turn the rack around and see the cables jiggling, all plugged into each other. (Yay for virtual cable management!)
So my epiphany came when I 'discovered' Dr. Rex's Loop Player. I had been trying to find a way to create a rhythm section for Live Session (our live band project emerging in the heart of the Leschi Lounge), the way Jay Rae does with his drum machine (I think its a Roland MC-303). The biggest thing I learned was that all the loops that I'd been playing as Live clips were static. Read: boring. Jay could turn the kick drum and snare drums on and off at the touch of a button, creating breakdowns and transitions on the fly. This makes the drum section dynamic and interesting.
Ok, but before I go on about Dr. Rex, I should mention another thing that I was getting stuck on. Though Reason is my instrument, I wasn't 'playing it' in the sense that Jay plays his instruments, by clicking buttons and typing keys. I was using a mouse to move sliders and click play, stop, record. Definitely not the same feel. That was because I didn't understand how to get my MIDI controller to work with Reason. I'm using an M-Audio Axiom 61. This is a big mama, with 61 keys, sliders, banks, buttons, knobs. I'll be honest - it scares me. But alas I was saved. I stumbled upon (actually I think I RTFM) drivers that M-Audio wrote to work with Reason, making it pretty 'plug-in-play'. I don't have to program anything to get the knobs and sliders on my MIDI controller to move the knobs and sliders on Dr. Rex. And I can manually assign the pads to start and stop multiple Dr. Rex's, where I'm storing the loops. Yay!! Now I have more of an instrument that I can punch, twist, roll, click without the bore & bandwidth restraints of going through a mouse. And, I make the loops dynamic by cutting the bass drum with D and S sliders on the Amp Envelope or (my newest discovery) by routing Rex into a track on Live and using Live's many many many effects. Now we're having fun!!
So the next step, of course, is to move past relying on pre-made loops and build my own rhythms. But until then, I have quite a few different genre's to play with and Jay Rae, Mel Sky, Sklobot and Aaron can build the backgrounds, melodies and basslines on top of some pretty kick ass shit.
Back to Remix, the magazine that is helping me open my eyes to possibilities. It was there that I read an article that recommended opening multiple tracks on Live and inserting different effects to each track. What a great way to try out different sounds! I still don't understand everything that the rag talks about, but the hardware centerfolds, revealing all their RCA's, XLR, quarter inch and firewire jacks sure do make my mouth water. My favorite article is where the cover artist drops their drawers, sharing with us all the tools in their studio. Underworld, Bjork, Felix da Housecat. All the pieces they use to mark their own sound and experience is music tech geek heaven. I've seen it all. And I definitely want more.

The Gift
Last night Lg* said, 'You are very lucky.'
I said, 'Yes, but you make your own luck is what I always say'.
Lg* said, 'How?'
I gave an answer, but it wasn't very well thought out. I've come to some better conclusions today. A better way to express why the Universe has been so lovely to me.
Through DJ'ing, I've discovered many of my Gifts. By Gifts, I mean things that the Universe has given to me that have helped me through life. For example, I can see people how they really are, not as they present themselves to be. This is a gift because DJ'ing publicly is very social. When I am interacting with people, I'm speaking directly to who they are on the inside. I think people need that, crave that, and it draws them to me.
A Universal Truth is 'That which you give comes back to you tenfold, but never in a way you expect'. My Gifts bring me luck, but not directly. I use my Gifts to give, expecting nothing. I do it because it makes me happy. I feel joy. I help people first find themselves, then find their Gifts and eventually find their Art so they can express and start giving. The more I give my Gift, the more gifts I find.
I'm always actively working on being the best person I can be. The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz is my current bible of sorts. I'm learning not to take things personally. My I.T. contract was terminated two months early. This was a shock to me, but I'm okay with it. I can pay my bills for a few, that's one important thing. I'm very confident with my performance. I worked very very hard. And because of that, I know the termination has nothing to do with me. The claim was that I made too many mistakes. And its true, I did. But I performed my best, and, in my opinion, the best that most people could, given the difficulty of the situation.
I'm learning to focus on the positive. Positive begets positive, just as negative begets negative. 'What you focus on with your thought and feeling is what you attract into your experience'1, another Universal Truth. Instead of thinking about how many awful things were related to my contract, I'm focusing on what I got out of it. Things that help me grow.
For example, I was forced to learn a very large, undocumented system in a very short amount of time. Because of that, I'm much more confident about my I.T. skills. Secondly, I was working 50-60 hour weeks including weekends and many times worked until 3,4 or 5 in the morning or was called to work at 4,5 and 6 in the morning. I was more productive in that job than I have ever been. I'm continuing on that productiveness by using the forward motion to motivated me to work harder on my own goals now that I'm at home again. Next, I was asked to keep very specific details on the tasks I did throughout the day. Doing that in the workplace has helped me to focus the hours of my day now to work more on music and less on promotions so I can use my time the way I want to - to produce music. Another thing was that working so much renewed my appreciation on the importance of going out dancing with friends to get the grime of work energy off your soul. I needed that. I needed to be reminded that DJ'ing is not a job by having an actual job. Lastly, having to move my passions to the side for two months has helped me remember how much I get out of music and how it fulfills me. I want it in my life and I'm going to work as hard as I can to keep it there.
And I work. I'm a work-a-holic. I'm actually addicted to work. Addiction is not a positive thing, but chipping away at things piece by piece over a number of years is bound to get you somewhere. I've been a DJ for almost 7 years, in I.T. for 10. I have a college degree and started working when I was 14. I've come very far in life by just working hard.
I'm a very open person, a writer at the core. I want to share everything good that happens to me. I want others to be able to enjoy what I enjoy. I also want to share the bad things that happen to me. The most painless way to grow is by learning from others. I make many mistakes, because I'm not afraid to. I take many risks, though intelligent ones. I'm a true strategist. I think out everything. I've never jumped without that second parachute. But I rarely need it. Because even if bad things happen, they are still good. You make them into positive experiences, just by how you think and what you take out of every situation.
The more I give, the more I work, especially on myself, the more I stay positive and the more open I am, the more my light shines. And the more my light shines, the more people are drawn to me. The more people are drawn to me, I'm more successful of a DJ (or writer, or friend). And the more successful of a DJ I am, the more I can share what I've learned through all my experiences and through all your experiences. And the more that I share, the more powerful the Gift of giving becomes and the more powerful I become, as a person, an artist, a soul.

A message from our travellers:
We invite our community to share our vision and join us for a special fundraiser event. We are raising money to help a small group make a journey across the world to visit and learn from a truly amazing community of visionaries nestled in the hills of northern Italy. This community has lessons for all of us to learn on sustainability, artistic vision, communal survival, and among other great achievements, higher vibration living. This is The Federation of DAMANHUR.
We will be making this initial trip to bring back knowledge and inspiration for all. Returning later on with other groups to experience the magic for themsleves. Have a look at this unique and inspiring work of art at: www.damanhur.com
We invite you to join us for a special evening of music, dancing and learning. We've put together some remarkable talent from our community to entertain you, and we will have a raffle full of amazing art and other goodies.

Back to the Grizzle!
I'm back to the werkforce tomorrow! I'm starting a contract linux admin position tomorrow morning at 8am. Back to having money and no time instead of time and no money and pulling the grind with the rest of the Western world. Back to standing in long lines on Sundays at Trader Joes and going to bed by 9pm. Back to drinking excessively to numb my brain of the day's headaches and having romantic dinners at the city's best vegan restaurants. Back to answering to a boss other than my own destiny and to the satisfaction of putting out tech fires and finishing long term projects. Back to uncoiling myself out from under the warm kitties sprawled casually on the bed and stopping into my favorite coffee shops for an americano with room and those malicious maple scones. Back to standing room-only on buses and catch-up lunches with all my buddies that work downtown. Back to never having enough home-time and being able to buy shoes that aren't used. Back to watching 4:20 click to 5:20 on the clock and seeing the sunrise color pink clouds over the cascades, slowing traffic on the Aurora bridge. Back to the worst and the best of the 9 to 5 (sing it, Dolly!). Selling my soul long enough to fund my way further towards my passion's progress.

Back and Tan and Ready for Action
I'm back from burning man and ready to take on the default world again. There is a blog from my adventures this year stirring in my head but it will take a while while I reflect. Tura reminded me that I also haven't written the Vegas part II yet. It may take me forever to do things, but eventually they happen! Blog entries seem to have a life of their own. I just recite them to the computer, change a few boring words using the thesaurus, hit publish and there you go.
So what does the default world have in store for me this year? Well, I can tell you the next 6 months are pretty much werk, werk, werk. I finished my Music Theory class but I'm not sure if I passed. Regardless, I learned plenty and have much much more to learn. The biggest thing I've learned is that Bjork is the Beethoven of our time. The second thing I learned is that those who study many years of Music Theory and practice it are inherently sensational musicians. So there is much more Music Theory in my future. The next step before that, though, is piano lessons. That will help me be able to build melodies. I'm also practicing writing rhythms using various tools (Ableton & Reason) that simulate a drum machine. I'm learning from the Live Session and Jay Ray how to create interesting rhythms on the fly without the songs being static.
On the DJ front, I'm back to dj'ing shows, but I'm limiting it to once or twice a month (if possible) for my own sanity. I didn't manage to stop completely like I had wanted to, but I had a nice break off in July. I don't have any residencies at the moment, but there may be one in the werks.
I'm also about to dive back into the Tech world head first. Back to full time for this one!! Gotta do it, werk for the Man. Get 'er done.

A Playa Magic Part IV - The Journey Home
The journey home was the most challenging time of the week for me. On little sleep and even less comfort, I'd spent most of my days, after the playa, in the car with only an hour or two in between to rest and stretch my legs. I'd think that after 5 years of experiencing this event, I'd know the best formula for my decompression. But alas, as in all things, I am still learning. I have to admit that I was a bit of a poopy-pants, even though I had just come from the most positive place I've ever experienced. And isn't every experience positive if you make it so?
On our journey home, we swam in a private pool near Tahoe, saw the Redwoods in Northern California, camped near some bears on the border of Oregon. But the most vivid memory for me is that of the full moon, soaring over the city in Portland, the peak of Esnce's DJ mix climaxing from our CD player. How close it must feel to living on the moon when you are walking on the dried-up lake bed of the playa, the dark sky lit by neon outlines of human and alien-like Art.
How the moon draws us, every month, to our essence, just as the playa draws us, every year, to our source. By challenging us, pushing us to our outer edges, and allowing us to reflect on the ridiculousness of our modern society by building a new one in post-modern and prehistoric ways. To see our true beauty is to also see all that hinders us from it. It is our own Truth that leads us forward to find our power through Love.
And so in Truth, the emotional and physical difficulties that I worked through this year was my gift. And all that I have learned from them I carry with me from this day forward. Thank you, friends. Thank you, playa.

Mel's Magical Boat Ride
Last night the Leschi came alive for a very special occasion. It was Mel Sky's 30th birthday party. She began this delicious decade of her life with a Magical Boat Ride. The MV Kirkland, an historic 110' wooden ferry boat built in 1924 waited at the Leschi Dock at 9pm for the special guests to arrive. I was on the decks as the dock pulled quietly away. The vessel turned, faced the full moon and glided slowly along the banks of Lake Washington.
The boat ride was breathtaking, complete with two sets of turntables, two full bars and food aplenty. The lively ship was an eloquent escort, pointing out the backsides of buildings & whistling under bridges as we drifted past. Mel completely outdid herself (which is no small feat!). And to compliment her compassionate care for her friends-turned-family, everyone contributed their personal best, be it equipment setup, formulating food, loading & unloading, a cake constructed with plane & parachute or quieting the brigade later on the way to the Lounge.
The highlight of the night for me was when the music was lowered and the crowd gathered around 30 candles to sing to our sister her birthday wishes. The applause that rang after, the hoots, hollers and whistles, was finally the shining moment that Mel deserves. The vivacious cheers were for more than just throwing an amazing party that night. And for far more than throwing two long years of parties that create the legacy of the Leschi Lounge. The applause that rang through the cabin was evidence of our gratitude and love for our very special friend, Mel Sky.
To end the first portion of the journey, and introduce the next destination, was a salute to the element that fuels the Leo - Fire. Donia Love lit her poi on the Leschi dock and danced a slyly seductive performance beside pulsating beats. As she twirled in tune, she tickled our fancies, a passionate ballet with the kiss of burlesque. Her movements accentuated the beauty of her being, a true master of her Art. Before the balls dimmed, she handed the set over to Be Pink Love, who had only the night before lit her first poi aflame. Be lifted the light to inspirit her body, swirl and swoosh, synchronous with the music, her muse. As the flames reduced to their inevitable end, she swirled, then, the smoke trails that followed, forming perfect circles to each of her sides. She slammed the last poi into the ground as applause ensued, which lit the ball on fire again. Proof that energy, when fueled, will transfer but never end.
The rest of the night commenced as usual in the cozy rooms of the Leschi Lounge, a house that has its own agenda. A night of intimate conversations and intense realizations, a groove that gives to each and all a warm hug. Everyone filtered out in ones and twos as the night mingled with morning, feeling fulfilled to have once again been home.
And so another night is set in history. A promoter's right of passage, an Art form that acquires little notice but is possibly the most complex of all. The materialization of an event that progresses so smoothly the patrons know nothing of the mechanics moving beneath. Like a mix, the blending of elements, each one melts naturally into the next. What pleasures the promoter is the smile, a symbol of gratitude that lets them know something special moved inside you, enlivened by the platform that they create.

Sally Speaks
I sent an email to Sally J. Clark, Seattle Council-person working on legislation for the city's proposed Nightlife Ordinance. I received a polite, generic response, thanking me for my time. I was also automatically signed up to receive her monthly newsletter. Without my consent. But I read it anyway. Here's what she has to say about this issue that hits to close to home. Scroll to the bottom for other articles regarding nightlife ordinance status.
Quote Sally -
"Neighborhoods & Nightlife
Regrettably, the shooting of a young woman on Western Ave. in Belltown near closing time on July 2 focused attention on the bad things that can come along with Seattle’s great nightlife. We want a nightlife that’s exciting, creative, sustainable, and safe - that’s part of being an attractive place to live, and we must do what we can to support that part of our city.
Almost all bars, dance clubs and live music spots in Seattle run good businesses and their staff are skilled at throwing a party six nights a week (or more) without anyone getting hurt. Almost all. The problem is that every year there seem to be one or two clubs (out of hundreds in Seattle) that either cannot control violence in their establishments or, some critics would say, welcome violent people into their clubs. Police reports show that over the last three years many clubs have at least one fight or assault reported inside. While this is not good, it is hard to blame a club for some jerk’s random bad behavior. Unfortunately, each year one or two clubs in town build a track record of multiple incidents of fighting, assaults, brandishing of weapons and even shootings. Three years ago it was Mr. Lucky’s. In 2005 it was Larry’s and then the Mantra Lounge last year.
The need for dealing effectively with chronic problem establishments is the reason why I support a limited license for larger clubs. It would give the City a tool to force bad actors to clean up their acts or lose their license. The Mayor has a similar proposal that addresses violence, but I think it reaches too far. A club should only lose its license if it allowes multiple acts of violence inside the club within a specified period of time.
If the Council can't embrace a limited nightlife license, then my job is to put together the most effective alternative package possible. I think we have a very good package taking shape, one that will sharpen enforcement tools around noise and serious nuisances, commit more people to enforcement, and bring together bar owners and neighbors to advise the city on an ongoing basis.
Noise – We’ve heard loud and clear in every meeting that noise from clubs is a huge issue for neighborhoods. The goal of addressing club noise should be to help get the business into compliance and solve the problem, not to shut anyone down. That’s why I’m introducing legislation that would penalize clubs for excessive noise after the club has had an opportunity to meet the new noise standards. The City will use a noise meter to determine if clubs are generating more noise than allowed. If so, the club will get one warning. The next incident will cost them $1,000, which could go toward soundproofing. Then all future noise violations would carry a $2,000 ticket each. The idea is to send a clear message that clubs must be responsible for their noise.
Nuisance – Under the proposal we’re considering legal action could be brought against a club for repeated occupancy violations. The overall goal is to help a club run a safe, successful business. Legal action is a last resort after repeated attempts to work with a club.
Enforcement – I support having City staff working at night to enforce the noise code and monitor for other possible infractions. Currently, at night police officers are on the hook for noise calls regarding businesses. This system doesn’t work because officers are – and should be – busy with higher priority calls for help. Sharing noise code enforcement with a civilian team means someone is actually available to respond to a noise complaint and police officers can stay focused on 911 calls.
Nightlife Advisory Board - This board -- made up of citizens, representatives from the music industry and other related experts -- could provide the City with recommendations about how to resolve disputes between clubs and neighbors, support the nightclub industry and curb violence.
Council has worked on this issue for close to five months. My hope is that a package of legislation can be created and reviewed at the next meeting of the Economic Development and Neighborhoods Committee on July 27, 9:30 a.m. We’ll also have a time for public comment at that meeting, in City Hall Council Chambers."

Dow for Now
The Seattle Nightlife and Music Association supports re-election of Dow Constantine for Seattle's King County Council. Tuesday night, you can go to Moe's and chat with him yourself or just order a beer from him. He'll be a guest bartender at Moe's for happy hour, 4:30 - 6:30.
Council member Dow Constantine
Tuesday, July 10th
4:30 - 6:30
@ Moe's
1425 10th Ave in Capital Hill
from SeattleNMA:
'He is unequaled as a pro-music, pro-nightlife leader for our region. Dow has consistently helped the music community in this town. As a legislator in Olympia, he sought to eliminate nonsensical limits on all-ages shows. As a County Councilmember he aided VERA Project and worked with [SeattleNMA] against draconian city nightlife restrictions. As a patron he never complains about the cover charge or price of beer.'
Donations are accepted at the door.
More info about Dow Constantine.

Paradigm in Toyland
Now that I have ended the month of June 2007, I can officially put into effect the paradigm shift that I realized back in May. This is the move from DJ to producer. Though its not so much a move, but the addition of a layer. Or, as I'm finding, multiple layers, coming from above, below, beside and, well, directly at me.
The first change is to cut down my DJ appearances as much as possible. So far that is 1-2 a month (not including Oseao). This allows me more time to learn whatever it is I need to learn to make my own music. And let me tell you, there are A LOT of moving parts. More that I ever imagined. But hey, if it was easy, I would have already mastered it, right? And then what would I do? (Considering the complexity of this, the next step feels like quantum physics.)
The second change comes from a live project that I've been involved with, otherwise known as an 'electronic band'. Live Sessions, I've been calling them. These consist of myself on decks, Mel Sky on Keyboards, Sklobot on Sax, Bass & effects, Jay Ray on Synth, Drum Machine & effects & Aaron also on Bass. Fun right? True until I realized that as a DJ with 1 CD-J and 1 Vinyl turntable my options are very limited. Its like I'm holding two markers, one in each hand. I can change the colors, maybe the thickness of the stroke. But in the end, I'm still only holding two markers. So I bought a new drawing kit. Which is more like a multi-level Art Supply Warehouse. A kingdom of markers, paint brushes, colored pencils, crayons, airbrush, acrylics, oil, pastels, clay, pottery, even the sexy nude model if I want... Ableton Live software and a laptop to boot. This is the shit. Now I don't have just 1 loop on CD and 1 loop on Vinyl. Now I have a million bazillion loops, vocals, instruments & effects to play simultaneously. Well, once I learn how to use the thing. I feel like I was just handed the keys to an F/A-18 Hornet Fighter Pilot, a Blue Angels helmet and instructions -- 'Here you are, now go fly!' Uh, ok. How?
The third layer is the MIDI Controller Keyboard that I bought down in Portland, which has since been more like our favorite toy, Woody, who was all but forgotten after the addition of the flashy Buzz Lightyear to the family. But every time I fire up Reason, I fish they keyboard out of the bottom of the box too. They go hand in hand, er key in key, and knob in knob, and slider in button, and button in key, and slider in modulator and transpose in octave and ctrl assign data1 to store recall... Ugh! Figuring out how to map the sounds I want to the knobs I want to control them is yet another learning curve. Slowly but surely, its happening. I can connect 1-A and 2-B. But I still have to figure out how to connect R## = Combine##(V - C(I), K - I). What the Bleep, Right?
In the midst of all these new fun toys, I realize that I can construct my Legos to be the highest most complex structures that I want, but without a proper base, they just won't hold. I want them to look good! Er, sound good. No, sound fantastic. Enter the bottom layer, the basis of all music (well, the basis above the math part). Music Theory 101 (Thank you, Seattle Central!). I'm finally learning what 4/4 really means. And major minor, scale, clefs, compound meter, grand staff, accidentals, intervals, double flat, middle C ... I could list them all, but I should be really doing my homework right now.
And now that its the age of technology, with each of these layers comes new software to learn, new terms to learn, new interfaces to connect, new websites to bookmark, new magazines to subscribe. Wikipedia is my very very very best friend.
Oh yeah, and it might be helpful to actually learn to play the piano. There's a bunch of notes swimming around in my head. I'd like to actually know what they are.
I got a long way to go.
Quantum Physics, here I come!

Esthetic Evolution 3
In the vein of Burning Man, EE3 is a 3-day camping art festival in the heart of Idaho featuring performances by artists from Boise, Seattle, Portland, LA, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Pheonix and more. The producers of this event, People of Earth and pr0cess are striving to bring the culture of art on a more open and expression-based canvas to Idaho. As a part of your participation we hope that everyone will come to share whatever artistic abilities they have with other Esthetic goers. The definition of Art here does not pertain to anything specific. It can include many things, but is not limited to; theme camps, costumes, theatre performance, fire exhibition, juggling, dancing, stilt-walking, free-standing art structures, body modification, games, multi-medium sculpture, painting, or any other form of self-expression that you can put your mind to. All are welcome so please come and share your talents.
Performers from Seattle include KJ Sawka, Adlib (People of Earth), Cory Ley, Recess (Shameless), Menami (Shameless), Jen Woolfe (Leschi Lounge) & Kids for Tomorrow. Check out the Lineup here!
The location is well worth the drive as it is hosted at the scenic and spacious Twin Springs Resort. The drive takes you through Idaho's beautiful and historic national forest past Arrowrock Dam and beyond the reservoir which it contains. Click here for more directions and more info.
The Festival will be be mainly located in the meadow just past the main resort. There will be plenty of camping space within the meadow allowing easy access to the many presentations being offered. In addition, a location has been secured at the river where participants will be able to find respite from the heat of the day and enjoy additional performances of music right on the banks of the North Fork of the Boise River.
Tickets can be purchased from the web through PayPal or at the Gate. More info.

Manifest Our Destiny
I read this quote in the Real Change newspaper that I got from the guy outside Trader Joe's today.
The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination.
- John Schaar
I also learned about a local funeral co-op, the Urban Indian Health Program that Bush tried to cut last year (but was approved by the House instead with $1 million more than the proposed cuts), that the UW recently signed on to a program called the Designated Suppliers Program that will make UW apparel sweatshop free (currently the clothes are made in 8,000 different Latin American factories) and a girl named Jessica who, after graduating from foster care to become an adult, is fighting to find her way in the world.
It only took about 20 minutes to read through. It was worth the $1.

Where is Jen?
Back at the beginning of May, I went down to Portland to play at Ohm. For the rest of the weekend, I hung out with my Portland brothers and chilled. Infinikid was showing me his studio setup and Ableton, a software that is used to compose music. I mentioned to him that I had the money allocated to get a Midi Controller so I could start learning this, but I had been so busy DJing that I hadn't bought one yet. He said, 'How about now?'. Without wasting another minute, we hopped in his VW Bus and rode to the Music Store. As soon as I had mine purchased and in my hands, I felt the paradigm shift. To the Right.
Even further back, at the end of January, I had received a phone call from Nathaniel, a booker at Rebar. He offered me a monthly there, every first Thursday. They wanted it to be a queer night. I took it on. I found a hook. We danced. The first night was a smashing success. But over the course of a few months, the air balloon that I had launched slowly lost its steam. The third month, it crashed.
I'm learning many lessons.
Things went smoothly for me for a while, even soared. But now I am starting new. Within both projects. Within myself. Within the world around me. A new phase, new difficulties. Doors I thought were sturdy close behind my back. The handles break off as I turn them. Rust coats my fingers. I smear the amber dust over my face, my body, fighting the feelings of failure that try to take me. Anger, frustration. I kick the door. The wood splits, flimsy. I bleed. Into me.
Why not jump ship? Abandon the Labyrinthe that has been testing me. There are two long levels of them, after all, stacked one on top the other. Two places of worship I know nothing about. Expectation. Of myself. Its unfair to make a perfectionist so easily bored. Unethical to force an egoist be heedful to listen.
Why not just let go of my dreams and live on my life in a warm pool of memory and mediocrity?
I question my stance. Do I belong here? Are the floors falling out from under me because I am off my path? Or are the tall hedges and iron gates part of my building blocks to a new me, one that is more equipped with the Tools I need to propel me forward to unknown lands? How do I give up that which I'm so used to giving, which works so well, for Tools that, when held, I can barely recognize even my own hands? Seems I can't spring forward without first building the spring. And before that, where to buy coil.
The horizon I can see is beyond what is real. Its image, even, beyond imaginary.
But it is not beyond me.

Today I called My Congressperson
I called my congressman and asked them to please CO-sponsor H.R. 2060, the Internet Radio Equality Act. It wasn't that hard. I thought it would be hard. But it wasn't that hard. I decided to do this after following a myspace bulletin (which I reposted) about how much trouble Internet Radio is in. The Man wants to shut it down. Not the Man that we burn. The Man that burns us. The Man who wants more money off Internet Radio. He complains that he loses money because of it. But he doesn't think about all the little companies and organizations comprised of DJs, musicians and tech geeks that want to work everyday so we can listen to music from the Internet for as little a fee as possible. I think he has secret plans to start an Internet Radio site of his own. But it probably won't be free. Lots of great sites right now are free. Sites like Groove Salad, Live365, or Seattle's OseaO.com. Some offer a subscription as well. I subscribe to Live365. Even though I can listen to most of my favorite stations there for free, I chose to get a VIP membership. Its only $5 a month. I do so because I want to support all those DJ's, musicians and tech geeks that work everyday so we can listen to music from the Internet for as little a fee as possible. I listen all day long. I listen to Downtempo mostly. Cafe Cody, Chillout 2 NY, Loungmaster London, the.zzzone :: ambient, onomatopoeia. I listen to House stations, too. Most of my Electro Dance Punk comes from DirrtyHouse Radio. Bet you didn't know that. That station is hot. I like to subscribe to Internet Radio, even if I don't have to. It makes me feel happy. I would hate it if got shut down.
That's why I called my congressman. It was really easy. I followed the link from the Myspace bulletin and went to http://www.savenetradio.org/. I clicked on 'Call Your Representative' and it sent me to this handy page where I could find out who my Rep was. My Rep is Jim McDermott, a Democrat. His office number came up on the web site, too. How handy. So I called it. There's wasn't an 800 number. But I called it anyway. One of his office people answered the phone. I said (like it told me to on the web site) 'I'd like to ask Jim McD to CO-Sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act.' She said he already was. She wasn't very nice. That didn't make me feel very good. That made me not want to call again. But I brushed it off. I will call again. Cuz it was way easier than I thought. And even if they aren't nice, having my internet radio all day sure is.

The Night the Music Died
SeattleNMA is sponsoring a city-wide awareness event called "The Night the Music Died". This is an effort to better educate patrons on the Mayor's proposed nightlife premises ordinance and to encourage them to get involved. You may have seen the full-page ads in the Stranger and the Weekly (thanks to both papers for providing the space for free) and today, the Seattle PI printed an article about the promotion - see it here! SNMA is expecting this to be a very successful opportunity to raise awareness about this important issue.
Participating venues will stop music and drink service for five minutes to highlight the dangers of the Mayor's proposed ordinance and encourage patrons to get involved by emailing or calling the Seattle City Council and voice concerns about the ordinance. The stoppages will occur at Midnight.
Get involved. Support SNMA.

Vegas, baby, Vegas - part I
After promoting & DJ'ing at Exposé on Thursday night, I headed home to pack my bags and close my eyes for a quick nap until Liz picked me up at 4am. But I can never sleep when I'm about to travel. There's something horrible and lovely about driving to the airport at 4 in the morning. The pain of exhaustion mixes with the excitement of a new adventure & the anxiety of flight. Shame the bar isn't open at 6am for Bloody's. Those always calm my nerves before take-off.
We arrived in Vegas at 9am and rented a van for the rest of our party (who had arrived the night before) to take a day trip to Zion . The weekend was a birthday celebration for Momo , 26. I had been hoping some friends would be up for a trip to Vegas because of a High School acquaintence that had I found on Myspace that happened to be a DJ at Jet Nightclub in the Mirage Hotel and Casino. We kept in touch and as soon as I had the opportunity, I told FunkyBadChad that I'd be in town. A graduate two years before me, I remember him very little and never spoke to him. He majored in drinking (according to his myspace). At that time, I had never even tasted a sip. Despite my band geek status, he was stoked for me to be in town and offered for me to spin with him during his residency set at Jet (voted recently as the best nightclub in Vegas and also visited recently by Leonardo DiCaprio according the the People Magazine I was reading on the airplane). I thankfully obliged.
As Liz and I rolled the van into the MGM Grand hotel where we stayed, the girls awaited our arrival with hugs and hangovers. Liz, a true Rockstar, accompanied the rest of the party to Zion, happy to sleep in the back of the van. I, however, decided to forgo the breathtaking scenery for the comforts of the hotel room. Nowhere else can you find the thick curtains that allow you to sleep the day away than in a hotel room, especially a Vegas hotel room. I had plans to visit the pools, but never left the luxurious hotel bed complete with 6 pillows and one long body cushion, only a slight representation of Be, who was probably arriving at her own adventure in Chicago at that very moment.
After everyone returned from their desert excursion and rested, we hit the casinos. Liz and I spotted a sushi restaurant in MGM Grand whose Rainbow rolls were de-fish-a-lish. We walked later to Bellagio to catch the water & light show (which of course we missed) but caught the amazing structures and artistic displays of the Bellagio otherwise. There we met up with Mel & Momo as well as a few of the Salt Lake Party Posse, Emily & Deuce. Emily and I watched Momo at the Roulette table, but after loosing $20 and then 7 hands of Black Jack in a row, I decided my luck was only to be found behind the decks, not in front of them. I retired to bed around 5am down $80, but a bunch of good times ahead.
The next day Liz and I found a nice breakfast cafe and then hit the pools. Yes, I say pools, plural, because there are 5 pools, 3 whirlpools a river and waterfalls amidst the complex's 'lush, tropical landscape'. This is why I love Vegas. Its so outrageous. One pool is a lazy river where you can rent innertubes for $16 a day and pretend you are floating downstream on the Yakima. Luckily, we were gifted some tubes from our neighbors and set out on the rafts to be drifted under fountains and in between splashing children. Strangely enough, I ran into a distant cousin that I see once a year at our family reunion (and who coincidentally happened to be Roseann's high school math teacher). This world is far too small.
That night we all met up in Mel & Momo's room to gather for the evening festivities. There we caught up with our other Seattle traveller, Mahogany and Night Queen, who brought all 4 of her recently single Salt Lake City girlfriends for a weekend of big city mahem.
Later that night, a few of us headed to the Grand Theatre to see Cirque Du Soleil's KA , the epic journey for which the entire theatre at the MGM Grand had been rebuilt. We were seated by characters, inhabitants of the village where the story takes place. I can't even explain how this production took my breath away. The scenes themselves were characters, the stage was dynamic and the heights that the actors went to in order to tell this story were incredible.
After being blown away by this bedazling performance, we had a mere 25 minutes to get across 'The Strip' to the Mirage and get into Jet before the guest list closed. While that seems like plenty of time to travel the length of about 2 miles, add such obstacles as two hundred people fresh from the production of KA standing in line for taxis, bumper to bumper traffic on the 8-lane highway itself, a monorail whose enterance can only be located through the jungles of Casinos built to keep you inside and thousands of tourists strolling the sidewalks with cameras in one hand and bottles of beer, cocktail glasses or bong-shaped margaritas in the other. In the end, the only way to get there in time was to run, weaving in and out of the crowds and cars. We made it at 12:08.
A little tip about clubbing in Vegas: It is SO not like Seattle. People actually go to clubs in Vegas. Thousands of people. So many people that you could stand in line for hours and not get in at all. There are three main ways to get into a Vegas club without waiting in line. First, find the short line. Next, you can 1) slip the door person some big bills to let your party in 2) buy table service, otherwise known as 'buying a bottle' (this is the recommended option) or 3) go to high school with the DJ. We chose #2 & #3 but pulled another $20 from the ATM just in case. 'Buying a bottle' means calling in a reservation earlier in the week to purchase a 5th of liquor for $400. To Seattle-ites that scoff at a $10 door fee and complain when there are no drink specials, $400 for a 5th of liquor seems like an outrageous amount of money. However, this includes mixers (not water or red bull -- be careful!), your own server, and -- this is the most important part -- a table. So, to recap: VIP entrance to big club in Vegas $35-$50, buying a bottle $400, having a place to sit down after dancing for 5-8 hours, priceless.
Before the show, we had met a few of our party for dinner at Dan Marino's Steakhouse in the Hooters Casino Hotel (why not?). But I have to admit, I could hardly eat because I was so nervous. Momo kept leaning over her ribs to laugh at me. She's seen me at many many shows and very rarely gets to enjoy how quiet I get when my stomach is all knotted up. 'Its good for you,' she said, giggling. I swallowed my lobster ravioli hard and tried to laugh, but it sounded more like a little choking squeek. But after a 25-minute run to the end of the strip, walking to the front of the line of a few hundred party goers to enter the intimate house room with 21 of my friends all dressed up in their club clothes and warm smiles, my nervousness drifted away, and I was excited for my first opportunity to play at one of the biggest clubs in the city where I was born -- Las Vegas.
stay tuned for part Deuce!

In Training
I've been travelling at least once a month since last June. Its fantastic, but it is wearing on me. Some of them are DJ related, some just great opportunities that I can't pass up. Its so great to have friends in different cities that I can call up for a spare couch, to show me around town, or throw me a dj bone. I've been blessed with Be as a travel buddy for most of them.
Lets map it:
2006
June-July: Europe. Berlin - Amsterdam - London - Milan - Cinque Terra Florence - Rome - Ischia - Mykonos - Ibiza (vacation of a lifetime)
Aug-Sept: Burning Man - Black Rock Desert, NV (dj gigs/spiritual growth)
Sept: 30 Miles outside Portland for Earthdance (dj)
Oct: Afterparty for Halloween in Boise, ID (dj)
Nov: Bambudda Lounge - San Francisco (dj)
Dec: Luftansia Holiday Party - Boston (dj) with a brief day in New York.
2007
Jan: Adlib's Bday Bash/Zoe's homecoming in Hawaii (vacation)
Feb: Urban Revival in Portland (dj)
Pi-Rem in Portland (dj)
1 additional weekend in Portland for a 'Romantic Getaway' thanks to Flexcar's member's benefits. (relationship growth)
Mar: Whistler (vacation)
Apr: Jet Nightclub at Mirage Casino in Vegas (dj)
Quincy's in Grand Junction, CO (dj)
May: Perhaps Vancouver. Perhaps not.
June: Esthetic Evolution, Twin Falls ID (dj)
July: Sun Lakes - Eastern Washington (family reunion)
Aug-Sept: Burning Man (dj/spiritual growth)
Sometimes I think the Universe has me 'in training'.

All In Due Time
I broke my sobriety yesterday, and no, it wasn't the first time. I'd been doing pretty well at 1 drink a week since New Years until last night. Even though I'd already had a Christalline Cosmopolitan last Friday at the Tamarind Tree (great spot - Thanks Jeremy!), I talked myself into the 'Sunday starts a new week' line and ordered a Red Bull & Jager in a tall glass with ice, using my free drink ticket. I managed to give the other free drink ticket away before I used it on myself. I sipped on this along with the Kombucha Tea I snuck into the bar. Some substitute that is working out to be. I bet it tastes really good with vodka.
I felt perfect until I was playing my set and some very lovely nice enablers kept coming back to the dj booth with shots of something-or-other. I took the apple ciddery one. I think later I took the lemon drop. So three drinks down, but I have to admit my set was pretty bangin'. The monitors were really crappy and I couldn't hear anything unless I used the headphones. So I know some of the beat matching was pretty off, but the dance floor never fully cleared, so everyone was having a great time. Nobody cared. Least of all, me.
So this morning I felt pretty oogly as 3 drinks is now, at 31, the equivalent of 6 at 21. But I cooked a big pancake and some yummy Morning Star Sausage Patties and now I'm feeling pretty good. I could use a nap. I was supposed to go up to the Summit today with some new friends Be met at Sugar last night. There's 6 inches of new snow, which is phenominal since we haven't had any new for like 3 1/2 weeks. But its a holiday so I decided to wait the day out and go up tomorrow when everyone is at school or work. Snow all week, they say!
Seems like the life, eh? It is.
But its not all parties and snowboarding. Well, it kind of is, but its still work, too. Since I got laid off my job 3 weeks ago, I've been busier than ever. I wake up every day by 8:30 and do a little Yoga. Then onto the computer until Be walks in the door by 5. Sometimes I even have lunch. Most of it is keeping up relationships. Promoting shows, sending emails, keeping my web site up-to-date. Managing details of coming events. Flyers, business cards, invitations, myspace messages. Evites. Phone calls. My new title should be 'Event Planner'. Occationally I clean the bathroom. Very occationally I vacuum the floors. Or write. At night I go to support other artists or have a gig myself. Once a week I pick away learning the guitar. I've played a few sets at home when the kitties aren't having a nap on the turntables. Sklobot came by once for a practice session. I haven't even touched the music software that I want to learn.
But flyers are off to the press for our new night at Rebar, March 1st.
And I am going snowboarding Tuesday and Thurdsay.
6 new inches!
All in due time.
