I'm Free to be Whatever I Choose
When I was in high school and college I was really into Alternative music. I went to school at EWU in Cheney, WA, and at that time there was no Alternative radio station that I could tune in to. So I used to tape The End onto cassette every time I came home from school so I’d have something to keep me company for the next quarter.
One year I taped The End’s top 100 count down of 1994. They played an Oasis song during the count down, even though it wasn’t in the top 100. I fell in love with the song and the band. It was called ‘Whatever’ and at that time (I have no idea if it’s still true) it was only released as a single and not available in the US. This is before Amazon.com or the popular Internet or the ability to get music from anywhere in the world with a click and a credit card. I thought my little cassette version of it was the only way I’d ever hear it again.
At the end of college, long after I’d forgotten about the song, I joined a study abroad program and spent 6 months in Ireland. I traveled all over the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland. I even saw a little of Spain. I was in some music store some where and I happened upon it. ‘Whatever’ by Oasis. I bought it and it’s still my favorite. It’s so freeing, beautiful and full of possibility. And it is a reminder to me that if you follow your dreams, work incredibly hard and keep your heart open to possibilities, even the things that seem completely out of reach will come to you, although most likely not in the way that you expect.
'Whatever' by Oasis
I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
I'm free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it's wrong or right it's alright
Always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long's it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don't cost much
Free to be whatever you
Whatever you say
If it comes my way it's alright
You're free to be wherever you
Wherever you please
You can shoot the breeze if you want
It always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long's it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don't cost much
I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
Here in my mind
You know you might find
Something that you
You thought you once knew
But now it's all gone
And you know it's no fun
Yeah I know it's no fun
Oh I know it's no fun
I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
Whatever you do
Whatever you say
Yeah I know it's alright
Whatever you do
Whatever you say

Not the smartest geek in the bunch
Also geek-related, I've been building a new Audio server at home. It's because my old one kept running out of disk space. I only have a 12 GB hard drive (please don't laugh out loud). To put it into perspective, most computers that are bought nowadays probably come with at least 60-80 GB hard drives. Barely enough space to hold the 6 mixes I have on there. I moved my CD burner over there, but it's not working very well. I may have to put it back into the old one to fill some CD requests.
I also moved my audio card into the new server. When I got it in there, I could hear it from the computer but it wasn't playing on my speakers. It took me about an hour and 1/2 of resetting it into the PCI slot, moving cables back and forth, checking the diagnostics, reading the install guide, and changing configs until I realized that the PC had it's own plug for speakers and I couldn't plug it directly into the sound card. Ugh!

Links, Blogs, and Misha News
Misha has a new track called Wakka up on her site. Take a listen. I'm also stoked to hear that she's playing in Chicago on Valentines Day with Paul Johnson! If you want to fall in love on Valentines Day, go check this show out. You will certainly fall in love with her.
My Dolly is Haunting Me
Like Tracy Chapman’s version of ‘O Holy Night’, the Muppet’s 12 days of Christmas and 495 versions of Amazing Grace.
I also came across a Christmas song (well, not really but Christmas is in the title) by Dolly Parton that I’d forgotten about from my childhood. This is significant because I had just rented the movie ‘Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ from Netflix and my DVD player is kinda broken. So some movies play just until the part that is the most important in the movie and then it either skips bad disc area or completely stops all together. And it was just coming the part of the movie where she sangs ‘I Will Always Love You,’ the original and (in my opinion) the best version of that song. Anyway, I came across another song in the movie, ‘Hard Candy Christmas’ which is so beautiful. So then I looked for a bunch of other Dolly songs and I realized something that I didn’t know about myself – I am a Dolly Parton fan. I don’t know if I’ll ever make it to Dollywood but her songs sure is pretty.
Also, strangely, Dolly came to town on Dec 19th at the Everett Event’s Center. Wierd. I think she’s haunting me.

3 friends, 2 Gemini belt drives, and bottles of Fat Tire
There was a huge line to get into the Rebar on Memorial Weekend, partly because Monday was a holiday and partly because Flammable is really good shit. My girlfriend and I (who later became actual girlfriend for a lovely while) decided we were not patient enough to stand outside forever, so why not start talking to the hottest girl in line and get in sooner? Enter Hotchic.
Hotchic and I became very good friends. She introduced me to, not only to the pleasures of making out at the Rose, but also to this fantastic state of mind we call House.
One Wednesday night, many moons later, Karen took me to I-Spy to see the second very special person in my life, Ben Watt. Everything But the Girl is and probably always will be who I consider to be my favorite band. Not because I necessarily connect to all of their music (like the early stuff), but because I love their sincerity, passion, talent and the way they respect music and encourage change. It was Ben & Jay’s first Lazy Dog tour and my first memorable experience with House. The music was so real and simple and fun. It just made me happy. Everyone was just happy. Dancing for the sake of dancing, smiling, rejoicing and sharing joy.
Hotchic was learning how to be a DJ at that time. She had been given an old set of Gemini belt-driven turntables from Jay aka ‘Grandpa DJ’. Karen invited myself and two friends Kevin (Evil Genius) and Mitch (Bishop) to come over on Thursdays for some ‘spinning sessions’. We all piled into her small studio apartment in Capital Hill with bottles of Fat Tire and Big Mama teachin’ us the gospel. Hallelujah! Spin Session was born.
Spin Session went on every Thursday for a solid 2 ½ years. Eventually we invested in better equipment, invited more friends to bring records, moved the congregation from house to house, expanded genres and eventually started putting on our own parties. Soon after, we were asked to play at other people’s parties. So much so that Spin Session was no longer actually needed and the Thursday night get-together eventually disbanded. But Spin Session still lives inside each and every one of us. It breathes each and every time we get behind the decks, sing into a microphone, hold our hands up high to another DJ who inspired us during those days dedicated to our initial learning. If Sunday nights at Rebar was Church, then Spin Session was our school house. And every once in a while the Session Crew, both new and old, bring our beats together for a little reunion.
Brandi Carlile and a long plane ride
Brandi Carlile @ Triple Door
On Dec 4th, I saw my first show at Triple Door. It is usually a Jazz venue, but that day was a special double performance night for Brandi Carlile. Most lesbians in Seattle know that Brandi is one of about 3 events that can get lesbians out past midnight on a weekday. And there is a very good reason for that -- Brandi is phenomenal! In the past I had only caught her show in bits and pieces. One highlight I do remember is when she sung an a ccapella cover of Radiohead's 'Creep' at Duke's in Eastlake. She is probably one of the few people who can do that brilliant song justice. So, to take a bit of a step back, I should first talk about how excellent it is to experience Triple Door. The theatre is very intimate, filled with booths and tables that face the stage. I do recommend eating dinner because the food is phenomenal. I had some shrimp with some sort of tangy sauce that was so good I wanted to rub it all over my body. The service is amazing. They are very attentive and love to top off your wine and water, I suppose so you don't miss any of the show. All your senses at the Triple Door are tickled.
I was just as impressed with Brandi and the band. They were tight, professional, fun and passionate. Their songs are beautifully written and performed from the heart. Brandi has a stage presence despite her youth. I would be surprised if she didn’t hit the charts soon.
There were two highlights to the show. The first was the opener. Unfortunately (this is one reason I never became a journalist) I didn’t get his name and can’t seem to find it on it her site anywhere. So if anyone knows who it was PLEASE let me know and I’ll post. [Edit: Thanks to 'Anonymous' for telling me the opener... Rafe Pearlman. Thanks!] He was pretty good until the last song that he performed. At that point, he blew my mind. It was a Native American, well, ballad, really. The only instruments were his voice and his intensity. During the hymn the audience sat unbreathing. Unthinking. Unjudging. Full emotion. The room was entirely still except for his voice echoing off the walls as if he were chanting into a canyon in the middle of the desert. Penetrating passion. He made me nostalgic for a way of life my mind does not recall.
Brandi embraced that energy and built on it through the rest of the night. She played part of the evening full instrumental and part acoustic. She told stories about her life and experiences that were witty and personal. You felt like you knew her. Like she’s chillin’ in your basement strumming songs.
The second highlight made Brandi not only your friend, but your family, too. She did something she said she’d never done before (except at the 8:30 show). She invited her sister to join her on stage to perform a song. Her sister’s voice was beautiful and complimenting. You could imagine their holidays together, even as Brandi told antidotes. It was a lovely performance, a gracious venue, and a enchanting evening. Brandi deserves to go very far. And seeing that she’s traveling on Tour with Johnny Lang, she probably will.

Anniversary Weekend
However, there’s a TON of great things going on this weekend, including some important club anniversaries.
(Fri Dec 3), Contour celebrates its 5th year anniversary with "Naked Sushi v. 2.0."
Complimentary Nyotaimori displays featuring the culinary art of NiJo Sushi Bar & Grill.
Resident House DJ’s Danny Massure, Danny Fortunato, Graham Jones, and Mark M.
I have to love Contour, not only because of it’s incredible music but also because it was one of the first clubs we all frequented when we set out partying, oh my, like 4 ½ years ago. I remember it being a new club when Kali introduced it to Missy and I way back in the day. Their performance art and other visual stuff was just trippy! One time they had a man come out of the back room, bald, painted completely white wearing all white robes. He was carrying a doll over his shoulder, also completely white…white hair, white dress, white gloves. The man placed the doll on the table and the she began moving in slow movements, waking up into life. She lifted her head, her arms, and stood, only 4 feet tall it seemed, on the table. Trippy shit that a small town like Seattle hadn’t seen much of before. I once also remember a projector pointed high up on the wall showing black and white movies of real dyke porn. Lovely.
Also on Friday, Doc Martin is at Element with Wesley Holmes! Doc is a House legend and Wesley is a Seattle legend. This will be an amazing show.
If you are looking for something more mellow, check out the Ragga, Jungle, Dub and Dancehall at CHAC. Here’s a listing from NWTekno. Good stuff.
If I don’t stay home on Friday, I might do something a little different (for a House head). I may head over to Aristocrats for some a Drum ‘N Bass night, Evol Intent. Thanks to Elltee and Shieny, I’m getting a lot more interested in this fast-paced rhythm magic.
(Sat Dec 4) - Uniting Souls presents...San Francisco Sessions v5 Tour
JT DONALDSON and LANCE DESARDI including local support from BEATRICE.
If Big Mama were in town, this is definitely where I’d be. However, since she’ll probably already have seen this tour in Portland the night before, I will very likely be at Triple Door to see Brandi Carlile. She’s playing two shows that night, 8:00 and 10:30. I haven’t been there yet and very much look forward to seeing this venue.
Elltee informs me of another excellent non-dj show on Saturday ~ Pedro the Lion at the Showbox. This also includes guests Viva Voce, Blue Scholars, Half-life Souvenir (featuring Rosie Thomas) and Shawn Smith.
BTW, Elltee is another Rockstar that must be noted. Not only is she a fantastic DJ, but she’s always heading off to some obscure electronic or indie rock show that I’ve never heard of but ends up being the best show of the night/weekend/month in town. This chic knows her music. Case in point ( I think I’ve already mentioned this, but it’s so noteworthy that it’s worth mentioning again ) she _seamlessly_ mixed Postal Service into a Drum ‘N Bass set on Halloween. Girl, you rock & roll! meow!
Another Seattle club anniversary ~ Last Supper Club 6 year Anniversary! DJ Rap, Eva, and Chronus. Sweet! And if you head out to this show, say hey to Kristin and tell her what a great job she did on the ‘Unbridled’ night back in October.
And on last note for the weekend, Julia informs me that there is an ‘I heart Rummage’ sale on Sunday for FREE at the Crocodile this weekend. Good start for the Holiday shopping.
