I'm Free to be Whatever I Choose

This morning I woke up to a remake of Oasis’ song ‘Wonderwall’ on KEXP. I love Oasis.

When I was in high school and college I was really into Alternative music. I went to school at EWU in Cheney, WA, and at that time there was no Alternative radio station that I could tune in to. So I used to tape The End onto cassette every time I came home from school so I’d have something to keep me company for the next quarter.

One year I taped The End’s top 100 count down of 1994. They played an Oasis song during the count down, even though it wasn’t in the top 100. I fell in love with the song and the band. It was called ‘Whatever’ and at that time (I have no idea if it’s still true) it was only released as a single and not available in the US. This is before Amazon.com or the popular Internet or the ability to get music from anywhere in the world with a click and a credit card. I thought my little cassette version of it was the only way I’d ever hear it again.

At the end of college, long after I’d forgotten about the song, I joined a study abroad program and spent 6 months in Ireland. I traveled all over the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland. I even saw a little of Spain. I was in some music store some where and I happened upon it. ‘Whatever’ by Oasis. I bought it and it’s still my favorite. It’s so freeing, beautiful and full of possibility. And it is a reminder to me that if you follow your dreams, work incredibly hard and keep your heart open to possibilities, even the things that seem completely out of reach will come to you, although most likely not in the way that you expect.

'Whatever' by Oasis

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
I'm free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it's wrong or right it's alright

Always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long's it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don't cost much

Free to be whatever you
Whatever you say
If it comes my way it's alright
You're free to be wherever you
Wherever you please
You can shoot the breeze if you want

It always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long's it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don't cost much

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want

Here in my mind
You know you might find
Something that you
You thought you once knew
But now it's all gone
And you know it's no fun
Yeah I know it's no fun
Oh I know it's no fun

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want

Whatever you do
Whatever you say
Yeah I know it's alright
Whatever you do
Whatever you say
