MP3 Teasers

Got a few mp3's out for your listening enjoyment. I don't have a lot of space on my server, so I can't put a lot of stuff up. I should really find some place to post my mixes so you can all download them. It's way easier than waiting for me to send a CD to you because I have some strange anti-magnetism towards the post office. Anyway, look here periodically for now www.jenwoolfe.com/audio.

There's a couple of sample mixes that are going up on the Hitgirl site and a tease from my newest CD that I just taped on Sunday called 'In-the-Pink'.

Who invented text messaging, anyway?

DJ's are dorks. Well, most of us are. Okay, maybe it's just me. Check THIS out...I called a girl that I'm interested in and left a voice mail. 'hey this is Jen, blah blah blah'. Then I texted my friend Jill and said 'ok, I called her. I sounded dumb.' But I didn't text Jill. I texted the GIRL. Shit!! Damn that was funny. Really.

I'm Free to be Whatever I Choose

This morning I woke up to a remake of Oasis’ song ‘Wonderwall’ on KEXP. I love Oasis.

When I was in high school and college I was really into Alternative music. I went to school at EWU in Cheney, WA, and at that time there was no Alternative radio station that I could tune in to. So I used to tape The End onto cassette every time I came home from school so I’d have something to keep me company for the next quarter.

One year I taped The End’s top 100 count down of 1994. They played an Oasis song during the count down, even though it wasn’t in the top 100. I fell in love with the song and the band. It was called ‘Whatever’ and at that time (I have no idea if it’s still true) it was only released as a single and not available in the US. This is before Amazon.com or the popular Internet or the ability to get music from anywhere in the world with a click and a credit card. I thought my little cassette version of it was the only way I’d ever hear it again.

At the end of college, long after I’d forgotten about the song, I joined a study abroad program and spent 6 months in Ireland. I traveled all over the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland. I even saw a little of Spain. I was in some music store some where and I happened upon it. ‘Whatever’ by Oasis. I bought it and it’s still my favorite. It’s so freeing, beautiful and full of possibility. And it is a reminder to me that if you follow your dreams, work incredibly hard and keep your heart open to possibilities, even the things that seem completely out of reach will come to you, although most likely not in the way that you expect.

'Whatever' by Oasis

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
I'm free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it's wrong or right it's alright

Always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long's it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don't cost much

Free to be whatever you
Whatever you say
If it comes my way it's alright
You're free to be wherever you
Wherever you please
You can shoot the breeze if you want

It always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long's it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don't cost much

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want

Here in my mind
You know you might find
Something that you
You thought you once knew
But now it's all gone
And you know it's no fun
Yeah I know it's no fun
Oh I know it's no fun

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want
I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want

Whatever you do
Whatever you say
Yeah I know it's alright
Whatever you do
Whatever you say

Not the smartest geek in the bunch

Looks like my Links and Blog stuff was overwritten. I had added the links directly to the HTML, but forgot that Blogger SFTP's my page from their site every time I update using their UI. So I'll have to either update the site by hand each time (lame) or write a script to copy my changes into the template each time it updates it to my web site. Yes, that sounds like more fun.

Also geek-related, I've been building a new Audio server at home. It's because my old one kept running out of disk space. I only have a 12 GB hard drive (please don't laugh out loud). To put it into perspective, most computers that are bought nowadays probably come with at least 60-80 GB hard drives. Barely enough space to hold the 6 mixes I have on there. I moved my CD burner over there, but it's not working very well. I may have to put it back into the old one to fill some CD requests.

I also moved my audio card into the new server. When I got it in there, I could hear it from the computer but it wasn't playing on my speakers. It took me about an hour and 1/2 of resetting it into the PCI slot, moving cables back and forth, checking the diagnostics, reading the install guide, and changing configs until I realized that the PC had it's own plug for speakers and I couldn't plug it directly into the sound card. Ugh!

Links, Blogs, and Misha News

I added some Links and some other Blogs to my site. NoVacancies is my friend Masil from high school in good ol' Steilacoom [sounds like still-a-cum]. Electrolicious is a really nice site that I enjoy. And Reluctant Hero is DJ Misha!
Misha has a new track called Wakka up on her site. Take a listen. I'm also stoked to hear that she's playing in Chicago on Valentines Day with Paul Johnson! If you want to fall in love on Valentines Day, go check this show out. You will certainly fall in love with her.

My Dolly is Haunting Me

I'm off to Boston (well, I was when I wrote this in my notebook on the plane) to DJ a Holiday party and I have a small confession. I don’t own any Christmas records. So I turn to my 2nd favorite tool of all time (how did I exist without this?), the Internet. We love you, Internet. We love your lists & songs & searches. Your live journals, meeting spaces and recipe databases. And the way you have answers to all of our questions ‘right now’, even if it’s not the correct answer. Anyway, I love that I was able to find Christmas songs that I never knew existed.

Like Tracy Chapman’s version of ‘O Holy Night’, the Muppet’s 12 days of Christmas and 495 versions of Amazing Grace.

I also came across a Christmas song (well, not really but Christmas is in the title) by Dolly Parton that I’d forgotten about from my childhood. This is significant because I had just rented the movie ‘Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ from Netflix and my DVD player is kinda broken. So some movies play just until the part that is the most important in the movie and then it either skips bad disc area or completely stops all together. And it was just coming the part of the movie where she sangs ‘I Will Always Love You,’ the original and (in my opinion) the best version of that song. Anyway, I came across another song in the movie, ‘Hard Candy Christmas’ which is so beautiful. So then I looked for a bunch of other Dolly songs and I realized something that I didn’t know about myself – I am a Dolly Parton fan. I don’t know if I’ll ever make it to Dollywood but her songs sure is pretty.

Also, strangely, Dolly came to town on Dec 19th at the Everett Event’s Center. Wierd. I think she’s haunting me.

3 friends, 2 Gemini belt drives, and bottles of Fat Tire

I started DJ’ing because of two very special people that came into my life, Ben Watt & Karen Nalls. Karen has two nicknames, Big Mama and Hotchic. I met Hotchic on Memorial Weekend of 2000 in line to Flammable at Rebar, or as Karen called it, Church. I had no idea of the significance of the night, this event, or this woman. This moment completely changed my life.

There was a huge line to get into the Rebar on Memorial Weekend, partly because Monday was a holiday and partly because Flammable is really good shit. My girlfriend and I (who later became actual girlfriend for a lovely while) decided we were not patient enough to stand outside forever, so why not start talking to the hottest girl in line and get in sooner? Enter Hotchic.

Hotchic and I became very good friends. She introduced me to, not only to the pleasures of making out at the Rose, but also to this fantastic state of mind we call House.

One Wednesday night, many moons later, Karen took me to I-Spy to see the second very special person in my life, Ben Watt. Everything But the Girl is and probably always will be who I consider to be my favorite band. Not because I necessarily connect to all of their music (like the early stuff), but because I love their sincerity, passion, talent and the way they respect music and encourage change. It was Ben & Jay’s first Lazy Dog tour and my first memorable experience with House. The music was so real and simple and fun. It just made me happy. Everyone was just happy. Dancing for the sake of dancing, smiling, rejoicing and sharing joy.

Hotchic was learning how to be a DJ at that time. She had been given an old set of Gemini belt-driven turntables from Jay aka ‘Grandpa DJ’. Karen invited myself and two friends Kevin (Evil Genius) and Mitch (Bishop) to come over on Thursdays for some ‘spinning sessions’. We all piled into her small studio apartment in Capital Hill with bottles of Fat Tire and Big Mama teachin’ us the gospel. Hallelujah! Spin Session was born.

Spin Session went on every Thursday for a solid 2 ½ years. Eventually we invested in better equipment, invited more friends to bring records, moved the congregation from house to house, expanded genres and eventually started putting on our own parties. Soon after, we were asked to play at other people’s parties. So much so that Spin Session was no longer actually needed and the Thursday night get-together eventually disbanded. But Spin Session still lives inside each and every one of us. It breathes each and every time we get behind the decks, sing into a microphone, hold our hands up high to another DJ who inspired us during those days dedicated to our initial learning. If Sunday nights at Rebar was Church, then Spin Session was our school house. And every once in a while the Session Crew, both new and old, bring our beats together for a little reunion.

Brandi Carlile and a long plane ride

All of a sudden, every moment of my time became occupied and I have left you dear readers in want. Luckily, I had a 4 1/2 hour plane ride and no cash for a Dig-E-player. This made time for me to tell you what the heck I've been up to that could be more important than my weblog!

Brandi Carlile @ Triple Door

On Dec 4th, I saw my first show at Triple Door. It is usually a Jazz venue, but that day was a special double performance night for Brandi Carlile. Most lesbians in Seattle know that Brandi is one of about 3 events that can get lesbians out past midnight on a weekday. And there is a very good reason for that -- Brandi is phenomenal! In the past I had only caught her show in bits and pieces. One highlight I do remember is when she sung an a ccapella cover of Radiohead's 'Creep' at Duke's in Eastlake. She is probably one of the few people who can do that brilliant song justice. So, to take a bit of a step back, I should first talk about how excellent it is to experience Triple Door. The theatre is very intimate, filled with booths and tables that face the stage. I do recommend eating dinner because the food is phenomenal. I had some shrimp with some sort of tangy sauce that was so good I wanted to rub it all over my body. The service is amazing. They are very attentive and love to top off your wine and water, I suppose so you don't miss any of the show. All your senses at the Triple Door are tickled.

I was just as impressed with Brandi and the band. They were tight, professional, fun and passionate. Their songs are beautifully written and performed from the heart. Brandi has a stage presence despite her youth. I would be surprised if she didn’t hit the charts soon.

There were two highlights to the show. The first was the opener. Unfortunately (this is one reason I never became a journalist) I didn’t get his name and can’t seem to find it on it her site anywhere. So if anyone knows who it was PLEASE let me know and I’ll post. [Edit: Thanks to 'Anonymous' for telling me the opener... Rafe Pearlman. Thanks!]
He was pretty good until the last song that he performed. At that point, he blew my mind. It was a Native American, well, ballad, really. The only instruments were his voice and his intensity. During the hymn the audience sat unbreathing. Unthinking. Unjudging. Full emotion. The room was entirely still except for his voice echoing off the walls as if he were chanting into a canyon in the middle of the desert. Penetrating passion. He made me nostalgic for a way of life my mind does not recall.

Brandi embraced that energy and built on it through the rest of the night. She played part of the evening full instrumental and part acoustic. She told stories about her life and experiences that were witty and personal. You felt like you knew her. Like she’s chillin’ in your basement strumming songs.

The second highlight made Brandi not only your friend, but your family, too. She did something she said she’d never done before (except at the 8:30 show). She invited her sister to join her on stage to perform a song. Her sister’s voice was beautiful and complimenting. You could imagine their holidays together, even as Brandi told antidotes. It was a lovely performance, a gracious venue, and a enchanting evening. Brandi deserves to go very far. And seeing that she’s traveling on Tour with Johnny Lang, she probably will.

Boy George Photos

I finally got the photos from the Hitgirl Promoted Boy George show changed from TIFF to JPEG format so I could post them on the site. They are incredible. And many thanks to Christine who is an amazing photographer. Please check them out here www.jenwoolfe.com/images/boygeorge.

Anniversary Weekend

Not a lot went on this week for me. I’m resting after the holiday craziness … a mix of two family affairs, 2 out-of-town friends, 2 out-of-town friends-of-friends, an uptight all-request DJ at a 30-person VIP party, 2 worm-infested pie crusts, a cover band in Sumner, a Sunday-night nude-fest, and a bought of diarrhea. Not necessarily in that order.

However, there’s a TON of great things going on this weekend, including some important club anniversaries.

(Fri Dec 3), Contour celebrates its 5th year anniversary with "Naked Sushi v. 2.0."
Complimentary Nyotaimori displays featuring the culinary art of NiJo Sushi Bar & Grill.
Resident House DJ’s Danny Massure, Danny Fortunato, Graham Jones, and Mark M.

I have to love Contour, not only because of it’s incredible music but also because it was one of the first clubs we all frequented when we set out partying, oh my, like 4 ½ years ago. I remember it being a new club when Kali introduced it to Missy and I way back in the day. Their performance art and other visual stuff was just trippy! One time they had a man come out of the back room, bald, painted completely white wearing all white robes. He was carrying a doll over his shoulder, also completely white…white hair, white dress, white gloves. The man placed the doll on the table and the she began moving in slow movements, waking up into life. She lifted her head, her arms, and stood, only 4 feet tall it seemed, on the table. Trippy shit that a small town like Seattle hadn’t seen much of before. I once also remember a projector pointed high up on the wall showing black and white movies of real dyke porn. Lovely.

Also on Friday, Doc Martin is at Element with Wesley Holmes! Doc is a House legend and Wesley is a Seattle legend. This will be an amazing show.

If you are looking for something more mellow, check out the Ragga, Jungle, Dub and Dancehall at CHAC. Here’s a listing from NWTekno. Good stuff.

If I don’t stay home on Friday, I might do something a little different (for a House head). I may head over to Aristocrats for some a Drum ‘N Bass night, Evol Intent. Thanks to Elltee and Shieny, I’m getting a lot more interested in this fast-paced rhythm magic.

(Sat Dec 4) - Uniting Souls presents...San Francisco Sessions v5 Tour
JT DONALDSON and LANCE DESARDI including local support from BEATRICE.
If Big Mama were in town, this is definitely where I’d be. However, since she’ll probably already have seen this tour in Portland the night before, I will very likely be at Triple Door to see Brandi Carlile. She’s playing two shows that night, 8:00 and 10:30. I haven’t been there yet and very much look forward to seeing this venue.

Elltee informs me of another excellent non-dj show on Saturday ~ Pedro the Lion at the Showbox. This also includes guests Viva Voce, Blue Scholars, Half-life Souvenir (featuring Rosie Thomas) and Shawn Smith.

BTW, Elltee is another Rockstar that must be noted. Not only is she a fantastic DJ, but she’s always heading off to some obscure electronic or indie rock show that I’ve never heard of but ends up being the best show of the night/weekend/month in town. This chic knows her music. Case in point ( I think I’ve already mentioned this, but it’s so noteworthy that it’s worth mentioning again ) she _seamlessly_ mixed Postal Service into a Drum ‘N Bass set on Halloween. Girl, you rock & roll! meow!

Another Seattle club anniversary ~ Last Supper Club 6 year Anniversary! DJ Rap, Eva, and Chronus. Sweet! And if you head out to this show, say hey to Kristin and tell her what a great job she did on the ‘Unbridled’ night back in October.

And on last note for the weekend, Julia informs me that there is an ‘I heart Rummage’ sale on Sunday for FREE at the Crocodile this weekend. Good start for the Holiday shopping.

Droppin' the Kids off at the Club

There's a reason people who go vegetarian should strive to stay vegetarian. Not only because of animal cruelty or chemical-infested meats or because you should earn the right of eating an animal by first being able to kill the animal. But because when one decides, after a few months of not eating meat, to eat a bunch of meat on a week of, say an American holiday where it's okay to eat turkey because it was killed for others anyway and I don't want to offend my new girlfriend's parents. And since I ate it there, I don't want to offend MY parents because 'why would you eat it for them and not for us?', and c'mon, turkey and gravy tastes yummy! The foremost reason vegetarians should strive to stay vegetarian is because when mixed with two days of stuffing themselves with butter-infested meals, double-doses of dessert, a mexican buffet and a whiskey sour, one's stomach has a tendancy to ... reject. Reject, reject, reject. Right now.

So on Saturday night I was enjoying a gathering of friends at
Last Supper Club when my stomach started to argue that my evening plans were about to change. I disagreed, telling it that, no, there were many people there that night that I wanted to visit with and I'm sure a little trip to the bathroom would take care of your needs. Problem #1 -- club bathrooms are impossible to poo in. Even in times of dire need. Even though the bass is blasting much louder than dropping the kids off at the pool will ever be. Even though your stomach is about to split into 4 pieces. Nope. The gates are closed. No exit.

New plan. There's a free self-cleaning bathroom right outside of the club. Perfect! The reason it works is because you go in, use the bathroom, then leave. The person behind you (here's where it gets tricky) WAITS until the bathroom doors close, the bathroom cleans itself, and then the doors open again all spic and span. Problem #2 -- not everyone knows how to use the self-cleaning bathroom. I was able to get rid of some of the 'unwanteds', yes. But I couldn't find any flusher on the toilet. 'I guess it flushes when I leave', I thought. But the dude behind me didn't know he was supposed to WAIT until the doors closed again and he entered into a not so clean self-cleaning bathroom full of my 'unwanteds'. Oops. Okay, a little embarrassed, but who the f*ck cares, my stomach still hurts so bad it's making my eyes cross.

Try the club pooper again. Maybe since I've broken the seal, it will help take care of business. Um, no. Too many people in the bathroom primping and gossiping. I think the gates are now pad-locked shut. I'm back outside to the self-cleaning pod, but my paranoia from the last experience has now taken over guarding the door with steal spears and is piercing the insides of my intestines with them!

owwwww.

Plan C!
Pepto... yes! I spot a convenience store on the other corner and head over there, my sides splitting. I asked the nice store owners for a small bottle of Pepto please, and did they mind if I drank it there? My car was right outside, so I finished the bottle off in the front seat and waited. Problem #3 -- Pepto does not work right away. Two bathrooms down, what am I going to do!?! Of course! ... Collins Pub. I ran as fast as I could up the street and was VERY pleased to find that Collins was mellow and relaxing and the bathrooms were absolutely empty. Thank you god. Thank you, thank you. And thank you again. After a while I exited Collins to a nice bartender saying 'Thank you for peeing at Collins Pub'. Little did he know there was so much more....

However, even after all this, my stomach was still giving me shit. So I gave in, said my goodbyes (quickly), and headed home to my own quiet bathroom with lots of toilet paper, matches, and a 4th reason my ass is staying vegetarian. Even through the holidays.

New Demo

I've finally cut my new demo into tracks. It's some commercial house inspired by playing at the Last Supper Club. If you'd like a free copy (cuz all my music is free) please email me at jenwoolfe@yahoo.com. :)

90% Rockstar

Ok, so I'm not really a rockstar. Well, not a full-on, 100%, 'you can sleep when you die' Rockstar. I didn't make it to Rebar on Sunday. My excuse... a really really busy week. Here's how it went (bare in mind that I work a pseudo full-time job) ~ Tuesday gig at SeeSOUND (I played midnight to 1:30), Wednesday I had to scan a bunch of photos for my Promo Pack (it's done!) and then headed to Cap Hill to support Spectrum at Baltic Room, Thursday I threw some records down at a really nice wine party hosted by Jason, Friday played at Mel's party and almost passed out from exhaustion until I left at 4am. Saturday night was Boy George (see praise below) and I also stopped by an after-hours called Night Cap. That was sweet! My boy Sheiny was kickin' up some Hip Hop beats and they had a live band & MC. I finally hit the sheets at 5am - ish. The sun wasn't up, so that was a good sign. On Sunday I worked more on the Promo Pack and then tried to rally up the troops. But without anyone talking me into going (Be lay down in bed ~ fully clothed ~ under the covers at 9:30 and said 'let's just take a nap') I couldn't muster the energy to get myself down there and support. But I gave it my best shot, and I'm sure the show at Rebar was wonderful. Lucky for me it's a weekly event.

Boy George is 100% Rockstar, and he truly showed his rockstar colors on Saturday with an amazing show. I was seriously impressed. Except for the difficulties into getting to the bar (which they alleviated by opening a beer-only bar near the dance floor), COCA was a great venue for the show. The dance floor was large enough to hold the crowd. The crowd itself was excellent. A lot of new faces. Very mixed ~ house headz, queer, techno-hipster. B.G. played mostly House tracks that were pumpin'. He kept the energy way up the whole night. From early on in his set he was smilin' and dancing, having a great time. The supporting DJ's were also all wonderful, including Marc Vedo from the UK and Hitgirls Misha, Miss Funk and DJ Girl 6. I danced my ass off.

Mel is also 100% Rockstar. She saw a TON of shows this week... (bare in mind that she works a Full Time job ... no pseudo about it) Tues she caught me at SeeSOUND, Wed Rope-A-Dope New Music Seminar @ Showbox (Charlie Hunter, Critters Buggin', Lyrics Born & friends), Friday was her house party, Saturday (This was a big day) Bitch, The Butchies, Boy George then after-hours and Sunday she saw Le Tigre. Mad mad mad props, gfriend!

Toot, toot

I know Gemini's never toot their own horns, but I have to in this case because Mel said a really kewl thing about me in my Friendster Testimonial and I really want to share ~

"Jen is the nerdiest rock star I know. She is smart, hot, and always making me want to dance, even when I have a broken foot. She's been cool to me from day one, keeping me up on the haps and conversing with me in geek speak. Good times."

Awe, thanks.

Some really exciting stuff coming up this weekend.
(Fri Nov 19) there's tons if Hitgirl action! Misha is playing tonight at En with Eddie. And of course the party out in West Seattle that I'll be kickin' it at.
(Sat Nov 20) the Hitgirls are presenting a major show at COCA with ...get ready... Boy George. No shit, dude! DJ Girl 6, Misha, and Miss Funk are all opening. I'm definately going to be there.
(Sun Nov 21) Miss Kick and Brandy Westmore are both going to be pounding some mad beats at the longest-standing weekly house night in Seattle (thank you Brian!!) Flammable at the Rebar. I know Sundays are difficult after a long long weekend of "rest", but you are Rockstarin' it this weekend because I'm Rockstarin' it this weekend and Miss Kick is outta here to Europe after this month and she is awesome you don't even KNOW!!! So put your most compfy dancing shoes on, ladies, go to the Timberline Sunday afternoon for their kick-ass drink specials, drink a big 'ol Monster, and walk on 1/2 block to the Rebar at 10. Oh, and bring me a Monster, too, because I'll be finishing gathering up some of my press pack (I am working on it, Kendall, really!) while you are at Timberline so I'll need to catch up to y'alls sugar rush.
Ok, for those who aren't ladies, there is an alternative to the Timberline on Sunday. Le Tigre is a killer pro-queer indie punk electro ish band that describe themselves as "one art-damaged, deconstructive, performance-art, electronic pop off-shoot of the grassroots punk feminist organizing and cultural production of the nineties". They are playing at Showbox on Sunday and they will be at the 15th Ave

FOCUS: Spectrum @ Baltic Room

If I was really kewl, I'd conduct a series of dj blog entries that focused on certain weekly and monthly nights in Seattle that are worth checking out. I'll try to keep up that tradition. I need a snappy name for it, but so far all I and www.thesaurus.com can come up with is FOCUS.

So the first FOCUS is Baltic Room's Wed night House night, Spectrum. Lovely. This night is "bringing you the art of dance music for discerning ears and feet" hosted by dj Airlok and features local Seattle legends (like Uniting Soul's very special Thanksgiving Eve party on Nov 18) as well as as well as out-of-town musicians like Tortured Soul (NYC). Last night Be and I stole a table from some sort of Holiday work party, but we had a great view of both the dance floor and Miss Kick's toosh. Highlights of the evening: 1) Making t-shirt slogans with Brandy Westmore and 2) $1.50 PBR's.

Please Miss Kick's mix from Spectrum on October 13th. It's as smooth as her tooshie.

Next GiG: Ovulate at SeeSOUND

My next gig is on Tuesday Nov 16th. It's at SeeSOUND Lounge, which is a really groovy futuristic and mellllooooowwwww bar in Belltown. Be says this place is a lot like hanging out in someone's living room. It's a great lineup of Seattle ladies including ElleTee, Aundroid, Misha, Miss Kick, and myself.

Oh Duh, Aundriod and Elletee have their weekly Friday night downtempo at Collins Pub (4th & Yestler next to the Smith Tower) TONIGHT. Free. Free. Free.

DJ 101 and Weekend Haps

I'm a very slow, gradual, step-by-step learner. It's taken me 4 seasons to learn to snowboard because I have to do each step over and over [and rolled and rolled ... sorry, Bubble quote] and over until I get it. In snowboarding, that's a lot of time on the bunny slope. So learning to DJ was a long slow process for me. Kevin and Mitch just hopped up there the first night and were mixin' it up right away. It took me about 2 1/2 months [practicing once a week] to get my first real mix. Before I could figure it out, though, I looked on the web and found a website that taught me the step by step "First you...then you...and next". However!!! The Hitgirls have just released a DVD about how to DJ that is totally rockin'. I finally got to sit down and check it out this week and it's way kewl. It shows the first things step by step, but also goes into more Intermediate beatmatching and mixing, and way kewl stuff that I don't even do yet like scratching and other turntable techniques, Equipment selection [which really comes in handy because a lot of private parties force you to quickly become an audio expert and equipment mover...I finally bought some turntable cases that I really needed], way kewl stuff about Laptop battling and Final Scratch, and [something you don't really think of but is actually VERY true] Dancefloor Psychology. In fact, I should have a separate blog entry for Dancefloor Psychology, as it's something that I'm totally learning right now since I just started really playing out in clubs. I tend to have a more mellow style and have had to consiously buy more peak hour stuff in order to keep the dance floor alive. Plus think about having 'hooks', tracks that people will recognize in order to get them out on the dance floor. It's really hard to DJ to people who aren't already House heads. My friends used to tease me and call it the 'thump thump' music. But I'm in the process of turning them. :)

For tonight, I suggest heading to the
Contour. DJ Chronus is there and Eva starts afterhours at 2am. BTW, Chronus has an awesome site and he's an exceptional DJ. I first saw him at Last Supper Club opening for Satoshi Tomeiie. Kevin, Sarah, and I all headed to Noc Noc afterwards and who walked in but Satoshi Tomeiie himself. Sarah went to talk to him and asked him what he thought of Seattle. He said he was a bit dissapointed in the city because there wasn't a whole lot of afterhours at that time. I have to say that Seattle has definately picked up in both in afterhours and regular hours since then. But Satoshi's show at LSC was definately one of the best I'd seen and he said he enjoyed it there. Noc Noc was pretty dead that night, but the three of us were entertained by a wonderful display of public sex by a couple in a dark corner. They smiled and let us enjoy. Perhaps Satoshi underestimated Seattle. We still got the good stuff, it's just a little more hidden.

And Eva just is awesome.

Tomorrow night is Derrick Carter at
Premier. If you aren't into paying a $15 entry fee, you should go see another great House night at Last Supper Club. Hitgirl's LA Kendall and Julie Herrera are doing their monthly at Last Supper Club for only $10, which includes entry into all the Pioneer Square circuit clubs. But hit up LSC by at least midnight cuz that's when the floor starts to get caarazzzy.

Can I get some Fries with that Shake??

I put a few photos up on my web site. You can see a list of them at http://www.jenwoolfe.com/images. Click on the ones you like to view. Again, if you have any photos from events, please send them to me and I'll put them up almost free of charge (just kidding). There are a bunch that Christine took of us from the Last Supper Club event I did on October 17th (1, 2, 3, 4) and some of Kendall as well (1, 2, 3, 4). Christine is an amazing photographer. Pleeeeese check out her website. There are also a few pics from Halloween. This is Zach, Be, myself, and Demetreus as Pasty, Eddie, Bubble, and the Sailor that Patsy picked up. There's also Mel as Wonder Woman and Whitney as a Freudian slip.

I'm heading (in theory) to see
Derrick Carter at The Premier on Saturday. I saw him at the Showbox quite a few years back. Amazing. Definately a great show to see. Friday you may see me either at The Contour or at Neighbors. Dunno. Depends on how drunk I get bartending for Shieny's party at the Tiki Lounge. Enjoy your weekend, kidz!!!!!!

Blog Moved to New Location

If you are viewing this weblog from http://jenwoolfe.blogger.com, you are not getting the most updated info. It has now changed to www.jenwoolfe.com. See you there!

To the Chapel and the East Side

Saturday I went to Baltic Room to see Brett Johnson. The vibe was excellent, though a little more mellow than I expected. At about 12:30 we popped over to The Chapel to wind down the evening. Miss Kick was playing her regular Saturday 'this be some classy shit!' night. That woman is a hard worker and amazing DJ. Sadly, she'll be moving to Barcelona at the end of the month just because she 'fell in love with the city'. Though she'll be back every few months, her absence in Seattle's DJ scene will most certainly be felt.

I am indebted to my wonderful friend and ex-coworker
Rich. He's been phenominal in helping myself and Sheiny play at parties and clubs. He's talked his company, Luftansa Airlines, into hiring me to DJ their company Christmas party in Boston on Dec 13th! Sweet! This will be my second gig outside of Seattle. Thanks, Rich! You are a rockstar. [Rich's favorite vinyl in my crate is Steve Bug's 'November Girl' on Poker Flat Recordings.]

One hot piece of Geek

My DJ homework this week has consisted of Techie stuff which only myself and a few of my cohorts will find interesting. But it's DJ homework nonetheless, so I get to write it on my blog. So I'm building a new computer that I'm going to use as my audio workstation. I very rarely buy computer equipment, I generally acquire it from cheap computer sales or friends that are getting rid of stuff. So the computer I currently use for my audio workstation only has a 12 Gig hard drive (gasp!). To put that into perspective: these days, I've heard you can't even buy less than a 60 Gig hard drive. Needless to say, I've filled up the 12 Gigs quickly with my large audio files. So my new workstation (Hippie) now has 2 20 Gig hard drives. I've had the hardest time loading Windows 2000 onto it. The partition table was inconsistent, which confused the Windows install. A linux install told me the problem. And, with a tip from Travis, I used dd to blow away the entire drive. Now Windows is installed! But for some reason the screen is a wierd green tint....so the homework continues.

Also in related DJ homework news, today is the end of my online
Dreamweaver course. Too bad I still have 4 chapters to do. Luckily, I have 2 weeks to catch up. I joined it so I could learn Dreamweaver, work on my web site (which now only has my weblog b/c I'm lazy and it's good enough for now), and have another Techie skill for my resume. Plus building web sites is really fun. At least, it was fun back in 1998 when I started and stopped building them. Back then, there was only HTML and Javascript to worry about. Dynamic HTML had only just begun to be used. So it's taking me a while to break through the learning curve of Dreamweaver. But once I do, my site will hopefully be a lot more functional/interesting/creative/informative/snappy than what you see now before you.

Now off to
Fado for some pints...then to Broadway Jai Thai for some non-techie DJ Homework. Eddie is playing with Brandy Westmore tonight. Jai Thai is such a great weekly Friday night House music niche. Brandy says it's become a watering hole for locals to Capital Hill. She always has great guest DJ's, in keeping with tradition at the Fremont and Belltown Jai Thai locations. I played there at the beginning of October and had a great time. In fact, I had such a great time (Demetreus had me drinking Apple Martini's the entire night), that by the end of my set I was dripping apple martini onto my vinyl and not being quite conserned enough about it. That's one of the great (and not-so-great) things about being a DJ...free drinks...all night.

Tomorrow night I'll be dancing my ass off (after attending the anti-war march downtown at 1pm, of course)
Brett Johnson at Baltic Room and celebrating Life's 3rd Anniversary, thanks to Uniting Souls. Come say 'hello' and for gawd's sake, don't buy me any Apple Martinis!!

Jay Tripwire

Check out Jay Tripwire's mixes on www.undergroundhouse.net. Yummy. I found out that he was here last week playing at SeeSound Lounge. I can't believe I missed that one. Ugh.

Hey, what's the best Electronic Music Zine? Urb? Resident Advisor? I need to make one my home page.

The most exciting thing

And the most exciting thing I did all weekend... I voted.

Halloween Part III ... and IV

III
-----------------------
Being Bubble for Halloween worked out smashingly. The hair was the key, definately. I waiting to the last minute, of course, to get my outfit all worked out, but after 4 straight days of watching Ab Fab, I finally got a sense of Bubble. I didn't even leave my house until 5pm to look for the outfit, but after about 30 minutes and $10 at the Value Village (where I ran into my friend Tura who was in town from Ashland...SUCH a small city), Bubble emerged. What made the outfit complete (besides the hair) was some fuzzy bright yellow slippers that I found. Fabulous, darling, faboulous.

Edy, Patsy, and the Sailor that Patsy picked up arrived at 10 and we headed to the first party, which was conveniently one block away from my house. Luv that. It was put on by a group called Space Virgins, an arts collective and Burning Man theme camp. The house was huge and all the rooms were decorated beautifully, with bright neon colors and lots of pillows for chill spaces. The bar was outside. It was so packed you could hardly move. Everyone had a costume. My favorite room was the one with the butt massager. We left the SV party about 12:30 and hit up Mel's party in West Seattle. That was much more intimate and most everyone got the Ab Fab theme. We were there only briefly before we headed to Kevin & Sarah's pad to end out the night. Their place was decorated beautifully. Demetreus commented that you can really tell Kevin & Sarah put their hearts and souls into it. Beautiful. We watched Evil Genius (Kevin) finish up his set in the basement that had wallpaper with trees on it. It felt like we were in a party in the middle of the forrest. Elltee and Audroid played some Drum 'n Bass for the rest of the time I was there. When Elltee spun in a Postal Service song, I almost blew chunks, the mix was so sick! I saw lots of old friends, including Contour Matt, Sarah, and Tina. Tbear ended the night on the decks. A wonderful party.

And after a long night and a long weekend, I finally got home...before the sun came up. Barely.

IV
-----------------------
I realized at 11:30 pm on Sunday (which was really 12:30 thanks to 'Fall Back' for an extra hour that I desparately needed) that since I'm on-call at work this week, I can take a 'work from home' day. So I did that Monday. Rest. Yum. However, when I checked my email in the morning I realized that I had volunteered to DJ at The Last Supper Club (again!) at a benefit for a local bartender that injured her neck. I was scheduled to play at midnight. Ugh.

I say 'again!' because lately I've been plagued with the Last Supper Club. It's a great club with a decent crowd and excellent music. But lately I've had a lot of events there for some reason, 2 benefits, a club night, and 3 VIP parties. I have a joke with the bartender that I'm there more than he is. Tonight, after a long weekend of playing and partying, I would have much rather stayed in my pajamas and watched movies until I fell asleep on the couch. But I trooped it up: had a 2 1/2 hour nap at 8, a shower at 10:25, 1/2 a Monster energy drink at 11:00 (darn Trader Joes for stocking those things!), and arrived at LSC at 11:20. Just in time to see the last of Misha's set and Julie's entire set. There were surprisingly quite a few people there (for a Monday)! It was great to see everyone supporting Verna after her injury. I lent all my commercial records to Tbear, and I've been kind of bored playing the same stuff lately, so I decided to play some Progressive House (for a guide to generes of electronic music, check out this page). I was a little worried that the crowd wouldn't like it, seeing as busy as it was, but they seemed to really enjoy it. I played a lot of vocally stuff. Some of the crowd kept mouthing for me to 'drop it in!' but I wasn't really sure what they meant. I guess they meant make the first bass beat really kick in. I really need to borrow a Pioneer DJM-600 so I can practice the effects. Anyway, I had a great time playing. I played the 'Get Fucked' song, (a white label by Harrison Crump) which had both Jason (the LSC Promoter) and DJ Stacy (from Girl4Girl) asking me about it. Funny, but the gigs that you least look forward to seem to be the ones that turn out the best.

Halloween Haunts Day Two

Last night was loads of fun. I started off the evening by getting the first half of my Bubble outfit done. I went platinum blonde. I didn't really mentally prepare for the blonde, even though I knew I was going to get it done as an excuse for my outfit. We had to dye my eyebrows lighter, even. Michelle is my hairdresser and friend from college. She's amazing. Me loves it.

So from there I ran home to get some food in my system before I was off to do double duty. My first set was at a bar called En (2nd & Battery) from 9-10-ish. My friend Shannon was the co-host, along with a man I've heard about for the last 2 years but hadn't met yet, Pierre. Really good people. The party was a great time. I was there pretty early, just in time to see a few of the costumes trickle in. I hope to play there again, as it was a super venue. I also met up with some West Seattle peeps (the ones whose party I had to decline for tonight) who were there for the party at En. David was an excellent Homer Simpson and Matt was a Rastafarian. I met Matt at a party I played at quite a few weeks ago (where this
pic was taken). He's roomies with Dave and Mel. Their Halloween party will be rockin', too, so go to it! I got a Bre-mail (text message from my sweetie) that said Be and Demetreus would be there shortly. My tummy got a little nervous (as it always does when my sweetie show's up). Soon after, Be pranced in as Edy; Demetreus as a 30's Suave. Meow. I had to get to my second gig in time, so I rounded everyone up, downed the Heineken, and headed to the car with my records.

The weather was perfect for Halloween. Windy and sprinkly, not too cold, shaking the orange leaves from the trees. I remember a few years ago it got cold so quickly that all the leaves fell off the trees before we could enjoy the oranges, reds, yellows. Seattle doesn't have too many seasons. I'd like to enjoy the ones that it does!

So off to Cuff for the 2nd half of my double duty. It was a Hitgirl night --
LA Kendall, DJ Girl 6, Misha, and myself. The Cuff was a lot bigger than I imagined. The dancefloor was wonderfully large, and the boys seemed to enjoy our vocally form of House. The mixer was much different than I'm used to. I believe it was a Rane MP2016. It didn't have any way of hearing both channels in the headphones, which is great beacause it forced me to not rely on that the headphones and listen to the mains. That's the best thing about playing out, the ability to learn on so many different types of equipment and play to so many different types of crowds. I have a lot to learn. Zach showed up after work and I got to watch him and Demetreus make out. Yum. Those boys are cute! At 2:00 am I was yawning and by 3:00 am I was asleep in bed. An early night for me and the kitties.

Halloween is my Favorite Birthday

Halloween weekend and I have 3 gigs to take my lil' butt to. I had to turn one down, even, which made me really sad 'cuz it is a party for a very kewl chic who is VERY supportive of my gigs. Plus she's seen me in the most drunken, drugged out states of all time. She's really got it down...show up at the end of the night, and hit up afterhours with everyone to see who really gets crazy. Fun stuff.

Anywhoo, the first one starts at 9pm at a place called En in Belltown (2nd & Battery). I'm wearing a halloween costume, but not my 'main' one of the weekend. I'm doing Bubble from Ab Fab. I haven't found her quite yet. Tomorrow is dedicated to finding Bubble. My girlfriend Be is doing Edy, and our friend Zach will be Patsy. Can't WAIT for the pics!! So after En, I'm headed to the Cuff in capital hill from 11-12 with the Hitgirls. It's a gay leather bar...mmm yea. I've never been there, but I'm kinda excited to check it out. I've heard a lot of nasty things happen there. Sounds just like the place for me.

Tomorrow I'm doing the 3rd Annual Dirty Hippie Halloween Party put on by my Burning Man and Session peepes in West Seattle. If you haven't been invited to this party, you haven't been invited to one of the top 5 Halloween parties in Sea-town. Seriously, these guys rock. Their place is always decorated really well, with goolies and goblins learking in all areas. The music is amazing and there are always different kinds of people from all walks of life. Work people, party people, music people, Burning Man people, gay, straight, wierdos, geeks. And there are tons of great costumes. So consider yourself invited. Put on your gma's old wig and get your butt over the bridge.
